Canon tether doesn't save to CF card - ideas please
Shooting Canon 1Ds Mark II tethered into C1 Pro (Windows XP Pro) doesn't save the file to the CF card. Hard drives can fail during a shoot without warning before the files are backed up.
I prefer to use C1 Pro 3.7.6 instead of the free Canon software.
Does anyone have any good ideas on saving to two different hard drives.at the same time, etc. when shooting tethered? I do not have a RAID and I am not interested in using one.
Thanks very much for your help!

Bill,
This capability is with the Canon program only.
No known work around.

Bill - if the tethered operation fails (like the firewire cable falling out as it usually does at least once per shoot!) the camera will fall back to the CF card so you won't lose the images. If you're really worried about hard disk failure then perhaps you could keep a backup running in the background?

I have discovered that when I installed the Canon EOS Utility software onto my machine one of the preference settings when tethered can be set to "Save images to CF card" (in addition to saving the images to the hard drive). I did a commercial job last week at a company location and it worked perfectly. The images displayed full screen in C1, saved to the camera CF card and also saved to the laptop hard drive.
Have a great week!0 -
Bill, may I asked, what preferences exactly? 0 -
johnyw,
The ability to write image files to both CF card and Hard Disk is accomplished
by using the Canon's EOS Utility software only.
So it is the Preferences within the Canon program that need to be set this way,
and to be set to write-to a Session folder for Capture One.
With Capture One open and Canon program establishing tether and writing in the background, all will word efficiently together for this task.

As was stated above the program you need to run is the "EOS Utility" that is what is it called on the Start Menu. If the installation defaults are kept, you'll find it in the "Canon Utilities" folder. It is included on the CD that comes with the camera or may be retrieved from Canon's website.
The EOS Utility lets you change settings of the camera that are not normally visible in the menu UI (e.g. setting your name to be added to the EXIF data of each photo or synchronizing the camera's date and time with the PC's).
Connect the camera to the computer via USB before starting the program. Once the EOS Utility is running click the "Preferences..." button in the lower left. Then go to the "Remote Shooting" tab in the dialog box that appears. There you'll find a check box for "Save also on the camera's memory card". Check it and click the "OK" button.
The setting should be stored in the camera, so any application that triggers a remote image capture will not only acquire the image over the USB interface, but will also cause the camera to store the photo locally on the CF card.
EDIT: I may be wrong about the "stored in the camera" part, you may have to have the EOS Utility running while you are using the remote capture of an other program--I've not tested. So double check for yourself before you rely upon this feature.0 -
Johny,
If you are desperate for a programme that will simultaneously capture to both camera and computer, Breeze Systems DSLR Remote Pro will do it. Works well with Canons.
