    And there is in fact no "apply changes" button, though you won't see the image without the cropped out area until until you change from the crop tool to some other tool such as the pan tool (hand icon). If you go back to the crop tool C1 shows you the whole image again, though you can see the boundaries of the current crop on it. This is because the crop, like all the other things that you can do to the image with C1 is non-destructive. You haven't cut away any of the image in your raw file and you can have it back whenever you like.
