Alt+click allows you to set your source point before you make the mask. You can also move it later. Hover your mouse over the source point for instructions.

That does not work unless I am miss reading it.

I am holding hold down the ALT key, the Plus + sign appears, moving the mouse over the spot I want as a source and then I click.
A line shows at the spot and goes to the top left of the image.

Am I leaving a step out or are there 2 keys to press prior?
I have a MAC, the ALT key is also the Option key.

Step-by-step instructions for setting the source point in a clone or heal layer
    1. create a clone/heal layer
    2. select the brush cursor tool
    3. move the brush into position of your source location
    4. Alt+click (click with the mouse while holding Alt-key)
The source location is set. You see a circle in the image.

Moving the source location after it is set. This works independent from whether you have created a mask already.
    1. move mouse to source point
    2. click and hold the mouse pressed and move mouse (a.k.a. dragging) to new location
    3. release mouse button

Not to hi-jack the thread here but sometimes I also get odd automatic source point selections when using the healing tool. If I want to heal the sky the software will pick something odd like grass at the bottom of the frame. What?! 🤓 No problem. I just drag the selection point all the way up back to an area of the sky.

In order to make sure that the point is visible, along with the long arrow pointing to it, I make sure my mask is visible by pressing the M key and I am in brush mode by pressing the B key.

I have seen this issue too, I expect its a bug. Mine seems to be behaving now though and I don't what has changed to fix it.
