Session Auto Backup

If you have stuck with something like the default folder structure for a session you can smply copy the whole thing somewhere whenever you want.

It would be rare thing indeed for all edits to disappear yet the previews to survive, especially as there are hardly any C1 tools that require an "Apply" action or equivalent.

Have you checked the subfolders in the image folders.

The Capture One folder should have 2 subfolders, one for thumbnails and previews and the other for edits and associated stuff in sidecar files. (.cos files)

If the .cos files are all new (basically created when the images files were found after the crash time) you may want to go looking for some random abandoned folders somewhere on your system.

If Windows has lost track of what is on the disk then firstly I would be a bit concerned about the drive or some aspect of the system in general and secindly if you have any file recovery software I would run that to see what it finds.

Parlty that would be to see if your past work was recoverable in some way and partly to try to discover what the full effects of the blue screen failure might have been.

    HTH.

I just had a similar thing happen to me and I ended up here while trying to search for a way to automatically back up sessions. It seems like you can only do this with catalogs 😐

My computer crashed while I was working on a session. After starting my computer and opening the session again, Capture One prompted me that it was corrupted and asked if it should repair it or load it from backup. I didn't have any backups of it, because it was a new session, so I opted to have it repaired. When it loaded, I noticed that all the edits and clone variants applied to the image I was working on when the computer crashed were gone. The image was reset. Other images I adjusted looked like they kept their settings. It appears that the settings file for the image I was working on became corrupted as well.

So my reply to the OP is more a feature request for the Capture One devs:

Is there any way to set Capture One to automatically backup the session db and the settings files? Even if it only backs things up when I close a session (since I closed and opened that session a few times before my computer crashed) that's still better than nothing. If anyone knows of a way to do this automatically whenever I close a session, please let me know!

If you are running a regular system backup you can just make sure that the sessions and all image folders are included in the backup.

That would not help with anything that had been changed since the last backup - your situation as described.

However in a session all of the edits are saved in sub-folders at the location of the images being edited.

The Session database is mainly used to build an index/reference to all of the individual files as far as editing is concerned.

If you have lost the .cos files (Capture One Settings files that contain all of the edits for a particular image file) then you have something very unfortunate going on with your system.

    Try this.

Create a new session (or just use another existing session) and navigate to one of the folder that contains the images that seem to have lost their edits.

Open the folder. You should see the images appear and the current session processing what it finds. Existing edits will be included if the files exist.

If you are comfortable working with Windows Explorer just open a folder that contains some of the images form the problem session and look for a CaptureOne folder within it. Open that folder and you should see two more folders, Cache and Settingsxxx where xxx relates to the number of the version used to create the edits. 110 for V11.

Open the settings folder and you should, if the files have been previously edited in any way, find various .cos files and a few other typess of files depending on what editing work has been undertaken. The names of the files need to match the names of the images to which they relate.

All of the files are written in real time which means that only edits that were being applied at the very point that the system or C1 stopped working might be lost.

In the cache folder you will find the thumbnail files or the C1 browser and the Preview files for the Viewer display. These are there for speed and convenience but can be regenerated at any time if the edit information is available.

I would be very surprised if you have actually lost folders of edit files. But if you have then I would strongly suggest you create a Support Case with the C1 Support Team and follow the guidance to provide the log files which, all being well, should contain all of the transaction information about what was going on internally up to the point that the crash occurred.

    HTH.

    Hi Grant.

Thank you for your prompt and thorough reply! I just updated my previous post to make it easier to understand my issue. You must've replied while I was doing that 😊 I also opened a support case with capture one, so I'll see what they reply.

I did look in the folder you specified, and it seems like the settings file for the image I was working on became corrupted. It still has the original created date and time, but the modified date and time has been updated to when I opened Capture One after the crash. That file must be a blank file with no settings now. Luckly, my edits weren't too complex so it will be easy to re-do them.

I think Capture One made a backup of the corrupted db file when it repaired it. I just opened it (after backing up my session) and it looks the same as the repaired session. Actually I didn't get a message of it being corrupted. I'm not sure how the new .cosessiondb.backup file got created.

It would still be nice to have a way to set up automatic backup of db and cos files within Capture One.
