Nope, its not just you. I experience the same thing here. Significant increase in speed.
This alone is worth the upgrade. Really really good job!

Are storing catalog on remote drive?

The catalog can save in remote drive, however it have to be plugged in every time you open C1Pro with this catalog.

In my case, Catalog saves on local drive and original image saves on removable drive, over 30k image 465GB images, the catalog is around 18GB, it is not a heavy loading to save it on local drive, it is also let me convenience on simply editing, and browsing without plugin the removable drive.

It is not recommended to save the catalog on an external drive or network drive. It will be quite a bit slower in operation compared to being stored on an internal drive (like a SSD drive).

Is this due to external drives being (most likely) slower or is there a different reason? I am asking because in my configuration the external drive is actually outperforming the internal drives with respect to speed.

Yep, the response-time is usually slower on external drives.

You can store catalog file on mac ssd drive and store Images on external drive. That is way faster. And C1 does not limit where you store images, so you can store catalog and RAW files in 2 location, moroever you can work on images development\preview with no connection to Thunderbolt disc, but of course you need those connection for export.

I have my catalog on the local SSD, but most image are referenced masters on a NAS. I think the catalog is a bit of a mess though, in my "folders" list I have 10s of duplicate entries - perhaps this is the problem?

I also have the feeling that C1 9 seems to be faster than C1 8 in general, but there are still some little lags from time to time, where I don't know why they happen.

    Example:

When I go through my pictures in the Viewer with the arrow keys, it often takes some time until the Image appears in full Resolution. There is a short time where the Images are pixeled, and then they are clear. Strange thing is, that it is not on every Image. Some Images are there instantly, others have the delay. It even happens on the Images when I switch beween 2 Images. Sometimes the same Image is pixeled somtimes not.

My Images are stored on an external SSD with 380MB/s read Speeds.

What is your preview size, if preview is yet build, then it takes some time to rebuild it
