Should I pull the trigger on COPro 9? (iMac retina)

If v8 works on your machine and camera, stick with that. The new features on v9 are nice, but not mission critical.

Usually big issues got resolved in subsequent minor releases (sometimes earlier) (my personal perception); this is no guarantee for your issues (should you encounter some).
3 month $25 per month seeems reasonable, doesn't it?
Also, for minor releases (e.g. 8.1, 8.2 etc.) the trial period usually started again, if I recall right, no clue for v9.i though.
If C1 works for you (figure out yourself) you'll get rewarded by great IQ and tools, imo.
    Cheers

My advice would be to use the subscription service, something I wish I had done. I have the identical iMac. I have a Catalogue of 17000 managed files. While I love the editing results with COPro9 and many of the workflow features - I find it significantly better that LR6 which I have currently abandoned - there are some major hangs / delays when starting the software in particular. It's about 2 minutes from launching the app before it's ready for anything. LR6 good to go in 5s. It doesn't look like a problem with insufficient RAM - the OS X Activity Monitor tells me there is no "memory pressure". I have verified/repaired the database etc etc. While I'm reasonably confident it's likely to be resolved in future updates it is pretty annoying.
Capture One 9.0.2, previews at 2880 px
    OS X 10.11.2
    iMac late 2015 5K 4.0ghz, 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon R9 M395X

I have been reading all of the posts related to performance of Capture Pro in the iMac retina. My trial period ran out while I was involved in some personal issues. My computer is a new iMac Retina 5k late 2015, 16gb memory, fusion drive and 4ghz intel core i7. Based on the commentaries I am somewhat reluctant to move forward. I suppose I could sign up for the 3 month $25 per month subscription and see how it goes. For those of you who have been customers for some time have you had good experiences getting issues like this resolved in future releases?
    Thanks!!

Slow deterioration of editing performance has been there for at least 3 releases. I don't go back further than that. So it isn't reasonable to assume that they will somehow fix it anytime soon. Also catalog performance is still way behind anything else on the market, don't even think about comparing it to Aperture. But, they are making progress, remember catalog is a relatively new feature in C1. In ver 9 I can actually complete a keyword search in my 60K database while it was a futile exercise in ver 8.

The biggest draw of C1 is the way it renders RAW images, I think most of us are here because of that. That's why it is so frustrating, while you can achieve similar results in Lightroom, it will take you much longer to get there. I find myself abandoning most plugins I have been using with Aperture and Lightroom simply because I don't need them anymore. (save for noise treatment which needs to be improved here) So it isn't easy to chuck it in and it isn't easy to to stay 😊

Many C1 old timers suggest using sessions instead of a catalog - probably a good idea from performance perspective but personally I am used to having everything in one basket. For most amateurs there is a continuity in their image taking, while pros move from one job to another. Also Phase One is improving their implementation of catalog, so eventually it will be a way to go.

I am hanging on... hoping... 😊
