Unusable Support - IPTC Issue

My issue is that unlike 3.7.8 and Canon DPP, 4.5 does not write IPTC data from a RAW file (in my case a 1Ds3 .cr2) into the output file. This makes 4.5 totally unusable for me, I have struggled and just about managed to cope with the infernal workings of the application itself but this is the deal breaker.
    ...
I use PhotoMechanic to do that as it supoorts a structured controlled vocabulary unlike C1 Pro (in any version).

For a test a took a 1Ds III .cr2 file, edited IPTC with PhotoMechanic and developed to TIF (8-bit) with CO 4.5. No problem with passing through IPTC data.
I am running Win XP Pro SP3

    Paul, thanks

I had tried it previously and got unpredictable results. Got some stuff got through into a TIF and other stuff when I created a JPG in the same batch. But today was my first test with a full IPTC load equivalent to proper production and I seemed to get nothing, at least that PhotoMechanic could see.

I will investigate further this evening but it is getting very time consum, ing tring to make 4.5 work!

4.5 brings across caption and copyright in a form that can be seen by PS CS2 and FotoStation Pro5 but not by photomechanic. In other words the very limited (useless) sub-set of text data that is supported in 4.5. Keywords are not visible in Windows (Tags). Copyright has a spurious strange character on the front of the copyright string.

3.7.8 and Canon DPP bring everything across: Keywords, location, priority (colour rating), dates, contacts etc in a form that can be seen by FotoStation Pro 5, PS and PhotoMechanic. Exactly as originally populated by PhotoMechanic into the raw file. Even Windows displays the keywords.

    4.5 Still not usable though.

    Martin,
I now opened the previous TIF test file in PhotoMechanic again (I had looked into it with Bridge CS4 after processing), and noticed that no IPTC info shows up. This confirms your results, I believe and that's not a good sign.

I have not used DPP for some time, and was therefore pleasantly surprised that it now supports IPTC. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. By the way: I just learned that Canon is a founding member of the Metadata Working Group and they recently published new guidelines:

I have the topic of IPTC handling on my bug and feature list for Phase One, when I make a support case. Please do the same if you feel the need.

I have done a further test and created a 16bit TIF.

Photomechanic can see no IPTC data
Fotostation 5 appears to see everything except the caption
PS CS2 can see pretty well everything
Windows can see Caption and keywords

which confirms my original issue (a separate thread) of inconsistent IPTC output when producing different output formats (JPGvTIF).

    So the complexity increases.

The 16bit TIF is my usual output for final cleaning and any PS editing and then I usually go to JPG for storage. But I do need to create JPG for speed and convenience and I don't always want the hassle of going via TIFF (I may not always have the space or time).

It is the inconsistency that gets me. It was all fine in 3.7.8 and now they go backwards.

DPP certainly passes IPTC through but I have not found a way of editing it although it looks as though it should support text editing - next version?

I am glad our findings align.

Paul I have raised a support case - that was an adventure in itself. PhaseOne now have nearly 200Mb of sample files!

    Fun! 😊
    And well done.

Have you had any feedback from support?

The response I have just had completely missed the point and they just reiterated that they don't support keyword editing in 4.5. Didn't even bother commenting on the fact that they were handling it for TIF! So have written yet another another 5 paragraph description!

So why did I send 150Mb of files to them?

    Martin,
I just filed a list of bugs, including IPTC support issues, in a single support case last night. Expect feedback later today. I submitted different IPTC XMP files (PS CS4 export) made from the original DNG file (Leica M8), a JPEG, TIFF and DNG conversion with my case.

    I will keep you posted.

Have now just tried 4.5.1 and here is my message to support:

    >>>> 4.5.1 is even worse.

JPG ONLY brings across Caption data - no copyright, source etc data.

TIF brings across everything BUT caption including tags, rating etc.

And both outfiles were produced as two recipes in single process batch.

This is unusable for my purposes for the reasons already outlined. <<<<

I think I will stick with 3.7.8 for now - I am wasting too much time doing PhaseOne's testing for them - I charge €150 per hour when I do project work.

I may have another look when 4.6 is available or just wait until v5. Could depend on when I next upgrade my cameras.

I have done another trial on 4.6.1 and it still does not support IPTC pass-through. In November I was told by support that the it would be fixed but no ETA probably 4.6!

They then closed the support case in Dece3mber (for their year end figures I suspect 23/12/08) even though it has not been fixed and they did not tell me.

4.6.1 may be better in many other ways but I will not bother looking until they fix this fundamental problem. I am now positively prepared to switch RAW converters after working Capture 1 since it first appeared at Focus in about 2002/3. I could stay with 3.7.8 (and will for the moment for my 1Ds3) until I got my G10 to replace my previous go-everywhere camera. 😡 🤬

    PhaseOne's response:

    Hi Martin,

This case was closed because the issue was logged and passed to R&D. Full IPTC implementation will come with a future release. That is all there is to be said.

    Kind Regards,
    Phase One Support

All that is to be said is that PhaseOne are not interested in providing support!
