Trial Expired
I have just downloaded Capture One 5 to test it out but the license shows as expired and the trial option is greyed out.

Maybe you ran a trial with an previous release earlier on your computer? Not every download/installation gives a new period (sometimes it does). Note that only a single start of the program activates the trial period. 0 -
I did try Capture One a long time ago but it didn't work correctly with my NEF files. They were all very red / magenta so I gave up and uninstalled it. I thought it was on my old computer but perhaps it was on this one after all.
I'm currently using Lightroom 3 (I gave up on Aperture 3 due to the bugs) but I'm not keen on the way LR interprets the colours and tone curve in my images. My plan was to see if it was worth using Capture One to convert my files to tiffs and then manage them in Lightroom / Aperture for their editing powers.0 -
Managed to use it in DB Mode so I could see the results for a comparison. The NEF files looked pretty good but my earlier files that were converted to DNG in Lightroom look awful. They shouldn't look any different really as the raw data should be intact. 0 -

True, all you're RAW data is intact but its all being read as a different format. Think of it as the same words but in a different font. The message is the same, but they read slightly different. The same results are possible but there is no 1:1 comparison between the two RAW formats as at this point they are different.0
