Star Rating Won't Stay
I have a series on RAW images from my Nikon D3.
When I apply a star rating to any image it stays for a couple of seconds and then reverts back to no star rating.
I can apply a star rating to one image, go to the next to apply a rating and in that time the first star rating has reverted back (vanished).
Very odd behaviour.

How are you setting the rating? Mouse click or numeric key pad?
Does it happen on all ratings?
Are using synchronised updates from external sources at all?

Using either the keyboard or mouse click results in the same result, the rating only lasting for a couple of seconds.
I've just noticed that this is only happening to images that have been imported using the Auto Adjust feature, which by the way still hasn't been sorted out by Capture One despite them knowing about it.
I've just tried an experiment by creating a cloned image of one of the pictures that won't hold the star rating and used the icon for resetting all adjustments. I then copied and pasted all of the prior adjustments back to the cloned image and used the mouse to give it a star rating and it held.
so the problem is to do with any images that have been imported using the Auto Adjustment feature.
A definite bug, in my opinion...
See my other post regarding this here... viewtopic.php?f=57&t=18862&p=91748&sid=a2f203b85458178d5e14a31c41548575#p917480 -
I have the same problem, it happen after I did an update 0 -
I've also just realised that the colour rating stays which is odd. 0 -
I don't use auto adjust on import so that may be why I have not seen the problem.
Bear in mind that just because people may be aware of a problem it does not mean that they have time to fully diagnose, apply corrections and test to an acceptable level before a "next release" that needs to be "frozen" a couple of weeks before it is made available. Clearly in the case of 8.3 the release was timed, quite rightly, to align with the announcement of the new camera system. That any other "bugs" were fixed at all is probably somewhat fortuitous under the circumstances.
There are nearly always things that have to be held over (or simply don't make the release if the marketing people and client base can accept that) for one reason or another often, these days especially, not under the direct control of the development team who are often constrained by what other providers provide.
My thoughts for what they are worth.

Richard,
I have had a quick play with this and not seen the problem you have described.
I doubt it would matter but I'm using Canon not Nikon.
Session or catalogue? (Session for me)
Are you synchronising to any external xmp files? (I'm not.)
Are you also applying a style or preset of some sort as part of the import?

Just seen this as well ...

Regarding the other topic you found, very interesting.
I'm using catalogues and although I do use the .xmp files they're not synced to any other application.
I do understand about what you're saying regarding the urgency of any development with regard to Capture One and would hope that this 'problem' might be sorted out in time for the next update, although holding my breath on this might not be a good idea.. 😉0 -

Update planning and resourcing must be interesting these days.
Own product launches.
Other people's product launches.
Apple OS updates and the baggage that comes with them.
Microsoft OS updates and the baggage that will no doubt arrive on the next flight.
I had a conversation with an old acquaintance earlier today that touched on these issues, amongst others, in a completely different area of software applications development and minus the Apple aspect.
Messy throughoout the industry despite people's best attempts at following good practice.
So many "needs" and "demands" claiming resources in order to keep up let alone advance.
I suspect that is something we will all learn to live with eventually.

After update to 8.3:
Same issue here, very annoying and needless time consuming. Color rating stays. Just found out that all the starred selections in another project we did last week are also gone. No good.
Other issue is renaming with F2, sometimes have to do it 3 times in a row before 'it sticks'.
I'll downgrade and see what happens.
EDIT 2015 06 23
I found the solution below (many TNX to gnwooding!!) :
I however have managed to sort out the problem by going into images under preferences and resetting the metadata settings to default. Any new star ratings I now make no longer disappear. The ones in the session that were lost remain lost however. I therefore believe the problem to lie with either "Auto Sync sidecar XMP: Full Sync" or "Prefer Embedded XMP over Embedded IPTC" since changing these to "none" and unticked solved my issue.
Solved, although all my older starred selections in other projects are gone.
Also, the renaming issue seems to be solved.0 -
I have the same issues with the star rating going away.
I import the files with another product from my 2 cameras (Sony)
When the files are created I open Capture one and create a session
I then navigate to the 2 folders with my pictures (camera 1, camera 2)
I tag the pictures with starts, that works but when I move to the other folder all the star ratings are gone.
very frustrating. Hope a fix is coming soon0 -
After upgrading to 8.3 I experienced the same problem in both catalogues and sessions. This has been a rather large pain since it lost all the star ratings in a session I was working on before the update.

Opening up other sessions and catalogues that were not opened between updating to 8.3 and applying the fix seem to be fine.
Hopefully this will allow some people to resume normal editing as I found working without a star rating system pretty difficult.0 -
gnwooding,
Thanks for the information and your work; this seems to have solved the problem for me as well, thank you so much... 😊0 -
8.3.1 Update - stars is back!
Also i was afraid that hard work sorting photographs was ruined (i used FastRawViewer more than year at it saves me great time and and significant amount of storage space). Thankfully, stars are there in every bloody session i have
(In Prefs i have set Full Sync for XMP).
Anyway, P1 don't list nothing about it in Relaese Notes.0 -

"Fix Sync to XMP" is mentioned but in the "MAC" fixes section.
I doubt that the grouping (MAC) of the note in fixes section is especially notable in this respect.

I have exactly the same problem when setting Auto Sync Sidecar XMP to Full Sync in Preferences [Windows 10]. Problem goes away if I set the option to None. 0
