What's a session

What is a session?
Does it just create automaticaly some folders to help me organize the different files or is it more?
When creating a session I can select between a "normal" session and a tethered session. What's the difference? Just the creation of the capture folders?
In the capture tool tab I can select folders by hand. So I could select the destination folder I want to use for my RAW files by hand. This would mean that I do not need create a tethered session when shooting tethered.

Is that right or are there some important things I did not realize?

    Correct, this is the basic concept.

    Yes, the tethered session creates an additional capture folder.

    Yes, correct again. By the way, you can set the capture (and other session folders) by hand from the Library tool as well.

    In addition to the basic concept of session folders for organizing your work, the session concept is expanding with session (smart) albums and favorites. These are more workflow related features.
