Finding files by lens focal length
In MP it's easy to find all your pictures from a particular camera, but can you find all the pix taken with a particular lens?
The info is, of course, in the EXIF data in Capture One, but how can I "mine" that data in MPro?
Any help appreciated!

Hello from France.
A good way is to use scripts. I wrote 5 scripts which recover infos from EXIF data and put them in personal categories. These categories stay in the catalog, except if you choice to record them when writing the metadata into the photos (if you do so).
The scripts are easy to use :
- you must create personal categories according to the info you need (because each script will take the info needed and write it in the category number ...x ; but it is simple to change this number),
- you select the files,
- you apply the script.
If you know (a little) Visual Basic, it's easy to change the scripts. Otherwise, I can translate them in english. Just tell me if you are intersted.
My scripts allow to recover : ISO value, speed, aperture, lens (focal) and description. Many other possibilities can be added.0 -

It sounds like you should sell these back to Phase One.0 -
There are plenty of scripts around on other forums for doing what you want. However unless you state whether you are on Windows or Apple there's only a 50:50 chance of these working for you. I too have such scripts, for Windows only, for selecting by Lens, Aperture, ISO etc.
It can be done without a script but is rather cumbersome. If you go to the "List" view there is a row of column headings for various attributes of your images. If you right click on this row you will get a drop down list of all the available headings. If you select these they get added as a new column (or deleted if you wan). You can drag columns to new positions as required. You might need to scroll down a bit but Lens and Aperture etc are available. You can then sort images by clicking on the appropriate column header and then manually selecting those that meet your requirements. I told you it was cumbersome but it will work providing your images have this information within them.
Why these data items, which are part of the catalogue, can't be used from other views is beyond me but it was like that under iView, and Microsoft and now Phase One have done nothing about it since. They've all forgotten that the purpose of the application is to organise images via the use of information captured at creation time or added afterwards.
Seems simple to me!

Not exactly.
I mean : not only images. I suppose that's why some useful infos (for a photographer) as focal lenght, ISO value, aperture and speed are not avalaible via the organisation panel. With scripts, they are and it becomes easy to select images with a mouse click.

1. Notes particulières = description
2. ISO (ASA) = no comment...
3. Focale de l'objectif = focal lenght
4. Vitesse d'obturation = speed
5. Ouverture du diaphragme = aperture.0 -

And, of course, a bit more as well...!
It looks as if you are using Custom Fields to hold this information. It works for you and, within the limitations of the software and your requirements, it may be the best and/or only solution. However you are duplicating information that is already in the catalogue, and if syncing this information back to the images, you are also duplicating it there. And as these are proprietary data fields they are not easily portable to other applications.
What is really needed is for Media Pro to allow you to filter images by these data fields automatically. I mean that when you customise the Organise panel it should allow you to display, and therefore filter by, any or all Exif data items as well as the current options.
In fact it should go a lot further and be able to show anything stored correctly in any XMP data. I end up correcting the horizon in a lot of images in Camera Raw and this is held as a piece of information in the XMP data that Bridge stores. Likewise I may crop an image or remove dust in Bridge. This is also held in the XMP data. MediaPro doesn't need to understand the data but it should be able to display it and filter by it. I raised this as a request to the original iView team and was told it was a good idea. If the idea was passed to Microsoft they then ignored it - what a surprise - and I have no idea if Phase One know about it. As I believe Capture One stores its edit sessions outside of an XMP data I doubt they would be interested.

I agree !
The infos like ISO, aperture, etc., are in EXIF and I never store them in custom fields into the files. If I have to redo a catalog, I just (re)create my custom fields in the catalog and apply the script (it is fast). But you're right : it would be better if these infos were avalaibe directly.0 -
Thank you all for your valuable input!
I'll be trying to follow your suggestions - but I would ask Phase to emulate Lightroom where this info is readily and quickly available!

Yes, but LR does not allow access to localisation with hierarchical structure (and other details which don't make it - for me - a really good DAM).0
