Capture One 12.1 - Save your workspace b4 upgrading
I installed CO 12.1 today. Upon opening it my workspace was reset to the default layout.
I asked CO about it and they said that this is to add the new 'Guides' tool to the workspace (I assume they meant grid) and it does it on first launch.
Just a heads-up.

Did you save your adjusted Workspace to the default Workspace File?
If so it will always be overwritten with a new update.
Save it (or them) with a different name and in most cases you should see no change.
However when a new tool is added or a tool's function is changed in some way you may need to adjust your Workspace accordingly.
That might mean having to move tools around in the tabs to suit your preferences (none of the tabs are 'fixed' - just logical grouping suggestions) or adding the new tools that you wish to use regularly. Sometimes, maybe, removing older versions of tools if they have been replaced due to significant changes "under the hood" although since C1 supports the older processing engines it has used over the years the implication is that older tools are supported in some way going back several versions.
If you have catalogues or session with images that have been processed with older tools and intend to stick with those edits and engines in newer versions it may be worth keeping Workspace settings saved by Version name to make it easier to re-adopt them although so far as I know this is not a requirement.
HTH.

Opening 12.1 the worksapce was reset but under Window --> Workspace there's an automatic backup of the previous one. In my case it is called "Capture One 12.0.3.22". I click on it and I've got it back.0 -

That hasn't worked for me, I had to recreate my customized tabs and further I'm missing the layers tab which existed in the former versions. Well, I' had to create that again myself but that's annoying and not user friendly.0 -

I think the Layers tab change came in with V12 or maybe even with V11 at some point when some additional functions and features made the use of a dedicated Layers tab rather obsolete and so the tab was deprecated and the tools regrouped to more logical tabs where they were associated with tools more aligned with each other.
In effect there is now no real purpose for a Layers Tab to group Layer activated tools together.
This was explained at the time as I recall.
If you have customised you Workspace and Saved it with a name other than one of the 'default' Workspace names you should be able to access it an re-use it - although if you have re-created what you want that may no longer be necessary. However if you simple changed and saved the default workspace without using a personalised name there will come a point when your changes will be overwritten by another standard update.0 -

Thank you for the explanation, SFA. Well, the Layers tab existed at least for me up to version 12.04 and I find it quite helpful as a separate tab, because some tools also work on a layer level, so they can be set differently from the background, I found it more clear. But this is certainly different for every user.0 -

You can, of course, create a custom tab and put on it whatever layer-related tools would suit your workflow.
