No star ratings on raw files (but are on JPEGs)

I can't see the star ratings on my raw NEF files but the corresponding camera JPEG does have them. The files have had metadata added in Photo Mechanic, I now want to process those with a certain star rating. Adobe Camera Raw can 'see' the stars but when I view in Capture 1 and filter by the rating there are no results other than the JPEG files.

Now that I've paid for C1 am I about to discover it won't read star ratings in NEF file?!

  Have CO seen the files before you rated them in PM ?
  
  Also, are you storing the ratings inside the RAW-files, or on in side-car xmp ?

  No, ingested and rated using PM, then sent to CO.
