Are the images stored in the catalog, or are they referenced images on disc?

That is indeed the million dollar question.

Another one (and I assume Ian3 had this in mind): are we talking about the same images? Right-click on a renamed image and choose Show in Finder or Show in Explorer. To which image does it point? The one with the original name or the renamed one.?

Thanks again Ian & Paul - this must be the most unfriendly software available! And I cut my teeth on 3D Studio Max!

Anyway, the file was the "same" and the way I was able to fix the issue was this: I was viewing the images in the "recent imports" "folder", I then re-imported (?) them into the Folders portion. Then I was able to rename the viewed file as well as the file on disk. Either way, this make absolutely no sense to me. Why would I be able to change a file name in the catalog and not change it on disk? Seems like a recipe for disaster in the program.

I'll be attempting, once again, to understand the catalog use/abilities soon!

Never had a problem with renaming using a session. Must be a Catalogue thing?

One of the interesting aspects of this question is how the renaming should be handled in a referenced situation given that the files may also be used by other systems ... which will have no idea that the file has been renamed.

I use naming on import to a session. That's fine since, mainly, I leave the original files on a memory card at that point or, if importing from a disk, the naming is adding additional files not interfering with the originals.

If I reference the files in a session I tend not to rename them.

Usually if I rename in the session after import I am correcting errors (or making naming improvements) to files that, at that time, only exist in edited form in capture one. For the same files to exist in another session a swell would be no big deal usually since the session holds the folder information and not the edit information. Unlike a catalogue.

Thumbnails and Previews will be renamed or can be regenerated.

The one problem area I can think of might be files used for creating LCC profiles if the profile was to be widely used but that is perhaps a rare event for most people, me included. Anyone using LCC files regularly will probably have a work flow that handles the renaming needs or avoids them.

Sorry that none of that goes any way to shed light in what may be happening but hopefully the thoughts are usful in some way at some point.
