CO 6.2 crashing far too much
Since installing the 6.2 update, I've been finding CO is crashing with alarming regularity.
In the space of just two or three days of using it, it has crashed on initial start-up, when selecting a session, when changing sessions, when deleting a frame, when zooming back out of a frame that I've just zoomed into, and even just when selecting the File Menu drop-down. Sometimes it'll work fine for several hours, but then it can take several attempts to get it started again just so I can get any work done. It often crashes even before I try to tether my camera.
The 'crash' symptom is always the spinning 'beach ball of doom' and then sometimes it'll close down, sometimes it'll just remain there until I force-quit.

We are aware of the problem, and we will release an update really soon.

Thanks for the quick reply - it's much appreciated. After three attempts I've now got it running okay, so hopefully it'll stay stable for the rest of the day. 0 -
How did you get it running stable??
Ive just done a clean install Mac OS Snow 10.6, installed C1 and it crashes all the time!!!0 -
Hi
I recently upgraded my 2 versions of Capture One 5 to the new v6.2.
I must say how impressed I have been with both the look and functionality of the new software, I ran very
extensive testing with many files and every time my processed output was superior to Lightroom.
The Phase version 6 interface and tools seem so "grown up" and business-like compared to Lightroom..
Sadly I have now been forced to revert back to Lightroom as Phase is SO unstable, I've been using Phase since version 2, since 1999 and can't understand how something so fundamental as stability is in question. I had a studio full of clients yesterday and the software completely let me down, in mid shoot I was forced to launch Lightroom and continue shooting.
I will keep checking back as to progress on the fixes, its certainly great software I just want it to be solid and reliable.
Cheers Andy0 -

Try turning OpenCL to 'Never' and turning your Preview Size to the default '1000'. Those two settings will put less stress on the system as a starting point. Beyond that create a support case and we'll get some details to figure it out.0 -

Andy,
Please create a support case and provide us some details, we'll get you sorted out 😉0 -
my experience has been the same , I have just spent 20mins processing three frames, the software has crashed at least 16 times in the last 3 days, this is not a pro program and had it not been that Phase one cancelled all my C5 licences I would certainly not be using this substandard software, I would strongly advise any one thinking about upgrading to avoid it , I see little point in creating a support case as what is the point in being fobbed off with all sorts of excuses when the fact is I have to put up with this rubbish until Phase one resolve the problem .
For what its worth I am using a P45 back running a 2x3 GHZ quad-core mac with 5gigs of ram and to make matters even worse Phase one are trying to get me to upgrade to an IQ back, having experienced this dreadful software the idea of upgrading to anything relating to Phase one is laughable0 -
Same experience as all of the others and yes, I've created a support case. The problem here is that my clients need their pictures today, not when Phaseone fixes the constant crashing. The interesting thing is 6.2 runs fine on a 2009 macbook pro and is completely useless on a newer 6 dual core MacPro maxed out with ram and fast drives. The machine was as stable as a rock until 6.2 came along. I've gone through the all of the suggested methods of installing the software and I can't even turn off OpenCL because it crashes before I can open the prefs. 0 -
Well this is very interesting..
I have also not experienced these issues on my Macbook Pro, although the use has been more "light" than my studio machine
it does seem more stable running version 6.2
I also tried the fixes today and the software crashes numerous times, my MacPro is an 8 Core with 16GB of ram, all other applications including Lightroom are completely stable.
I have reverted back to 6.1x as like the other pro photographers we just need to get work out the door, we don't have time to worry about support cases etc, the software just needs to work for us..
Sad thing is the quality of my processed files are wonderful, if they weren't I certainly would have given up on Phase..

Quick update, I logged a support case last night and had a very fast response from Phase tech support.. thanks..
The first bit of advice was to disable the OpenCL, (I have certainly tried this and it didn't hep at all..)
The reply goes on to say..
"Second is related to multicore handling on some Macs. This is being addressed now and will be released as Capture One 6.2.1 but for now we would recommend downgrading to Capture One 6.1.1 if the OpenCL disabling does not solve the crashes."
I had already reverted to using 6.1.1 so I guess we have to wait for 6.2.1.. at least I know I've done all I can.

I have joined the ranks of "Crashing". Looking forward to update. 0 -
have the same experience with 6.2 - went back to 6.1.1 and looking forward to update 0 -
Hi there!
I had same problem. Tethered shooting w Canon EOS 5D Mark II and late 2010 17" MacBook Pro with maximum specs (8GB RAM etc..)
Capture One 6.2 Pro crashed and crashed again after couple of RAW captures.. But after I found that link and did reset CO, it seems to work perfectly, and I hope it lasts:
http://www.captureintegration.com/2008/ ... -4-on-mac/
It's for CO 4, but still works perfectly for 6.2..
I hope that it will work for you. And please tell me about how it works!!
And this would also work:

I have already posted on my issues with v6.2 on both my Multi Core Macs.
The software was completely unstable, I have downgraded to v6.1.1 and this week has been a dream
its working fine, fast and stable, I can forget about the issues and just get my work done..
My honest opinion is to wait for the fixes which can't be long, a few days ?? .. Bring on v6.2.1 asap please !!
After 18 months of using Lightroom all day everyday I can't believe how good my Nikon D3x files are looking through Phase Capture 6, its very good software..

i just upgrade to version 6.2 from 6.1.1 and capture one does not show my raw images .
It happen when i use my custom icc profiles. I have the nikon d3x and imac snow leopard.
I m getting crazy with capture one issues . there is always something missing with capture one and it is very frustraiting wile working0 -
Ive reverted back to 6.1, after doing the suggested complete clean CO install and the open GL etc, STILL crashed all
the time. Submitted a report up to be sampled.
Looking forward to big things in the update to get all back on track.
Cheers peeps0 -
I hope this can be fixed but i feel scare each time i upgrade capture one something is missing.
I don t understand how come a profesional software is sooo unstable.0 -
Sadly, I have downloaded CO 6.2.1 for Mac, tried it and it is crashing all the time (within a minute of trying to do something to an image).
I'm looking for a RAW photo tool that is stable and that we can use for our photography. We will continue using Lightroom 3 as it is stable, reliable and produces reliable results.
Pity, CO looked good after reading all the hype on Photography magazines and receiving recommendations by pro photographer's but from our experience it still needs some major bug fixes.
I've read other users feedback about modifying Snow Leopard to TRY to fix the problems with little success.
All my other programs work well and I'm running the latest MAc equipment with extra memory so I don't think I should be spending extra time to try to customise our environment to just run CO.
I'm going back to Lightroom and PS CS5 until you think you have a stable and bug free package that is also competitive in pricing with your competitors. Currently your software is overpriced for a non stable / buggy SW package.
I look forward to trying your fixed version when it is ready.
Cheers

Daniel,
I am not a tech expert- so this is from a user standpoint. You might uninstall C1 and do a fresh install. I am a LR3 user and like the program very much, however I am a bigger fan of C1 main b/c of the image quality. I find their algorithm to produce my images better. Of course I cannot speak for you, but It would be worth my time to try and get a clean copy installed.0 -

Have you followed the progress of Lr 3 on the Lr forums, Daniel?
Hundreds and hundreds of posts lamenting just how unstable, unreliable and slow it is - and full of bugs.
And yet for me - just like Cap One 6 (and Bibble 5, for that matter) - it has proven to be bombproof, and I don't have a particularly high-spec machine ("only" 8gb of RAM - and it's a Windows 64 bit machine too! 😉)
This may be another example of the point I've made here (and on the Lr forum) before, that it is not enough simply to assume that the software is the sole cause of problems - it may be an environmental thing too, with some little quirk of a user's machine set-up being enough to tip an application into failure.
I'm not doing anything special, and I push my machine pretty hard (Canon 7D files converted to 16 bit Tiffs - often hundreds in a session) and things are perfectly fine, both with Lr and with Cap One.
Assuming I haven't downloaded magic versions of the software, we have to at least consider that there's more to the failures some folk are experiencing than Capture One itself...0 -
I don't know if this will help but at one point, C1 kept crashing every time I opened the program. I narrowed down the culprit to an XMP file. Once I deleted the XMP file, C1 was fine. Try to make a temp directory and move all your XMP files to it and see if you can open C1 without it crashing. 0 -
Daniel,
If you are still having difficulty with Capture One 6.2.1, try repairing permissions and rebuilding your hard drive with a program such as Drive Genius. Doing this really helped when I was having stability problems. The problem may be with your computer, rather than with the application itself.

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could offer some fixes for an issues that has been plaguing our computer. Shooting Capture One Pro 6.2 tethered with a Canon 5D Mark II on a iMAC running OS X 10.6.7. If the camera takes pictures too quickly, it crashes. If I switch between folders, it crashes. When I boot it up, it often crashes. I'm trying to figure out what could possibly be causing all these problems. After using it for a while, it's easier to get a feel for how quickly we can shoot without causing a crash, but then it will shut down for no reason at all. Is this just an inevitability of using Capture One or is there something I can do to fix the issue. Side question: After upgrading to 6.2 the overlays don't automatically apply when shooting tethered. In the last version, once the most recent shot had an overlay it would automatically apply to the following shots. Is there a preference that I'm not seeing that needs to be turned on? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS.

Upgrade do 6.2.1. I'm using Mac 10.6.7 too and was having all sorts of problems... Since 6.2.1 was installed I have had only a few crashes... If you have not done this, try this... 0 -
Using 6.2.1 on 3 Mac Pros and so far same issue on all 3 comp. All running OSX 10.6.7 all top of the range systems (8-core and 12 cores) with 26gb of ram.
Having issue like everyone here, sometimes when doing operations too quickly it crashes the whole comp. It's happened on practically everything from deleting files, zooming in, adjusting levels, etc.
With 3 photographers working around the clock it's becoming a huge issue, and with a 4th photographer about to join the team, losing time while shooting is not good. 🤬
Really considering installing CO 5 again.0 -
If you have three photogs working around the clock you are doing something right 😄
I feel your pain, though. Open a support ticket if you have not already done so.0 -
YES!!!!! This is ridiculous!!! I had it crash 18 times in 35 min. It makes it impossible to do any work in a timely manner. Constantly the spinning wheel of death! I'm frustrated. 0 -

Frustration is understandable. Maybe you like to share more details with us. Do you use CO 6.2.1 already? Are you looking for ways to mitigate instability? Were previous version more stable? Typical kind of action that causes the crash?0
