Fixing 10.4.7 to work with PPC and Canon USB tethered
On behalf of Jesse who doesn't remember his phaseone login info I pass this along...
Thank you for your contribution, Jesse

OK,
So with further research, this bug can be corrected...
*Backup first/always*
You need to take IOUSBFamily.kext from system/library/extensions out of the
10.4.7 folder and replace it with the older 10.4.6 (maybe an older one) version. (SAVE this file somewhere else...) Then it will work.
You must *repair permissions* before and after the swap, or when you restart, you will not be able to use your USB anything (keyboard...). You will be able to use the keyboard to hold down the T or option keys, but after it gets past that, you'll need to hard restart.
This is hoping that you have an earlier version.
Our gear: g5 w/10.4.7
PB w 10.4.6
Apparantly to repair permissions on your drive, you can't do it to a drive on a computer that is in firewire target disk mode? Anyway, we had not done this before restart, and disk utility did not allow permissions repair on the firewire targeted g5. We were able to reboot using the g5's 2nd internal and correct permissions.
All is well now (so far...) capturing w/20D
There is a thread on apple's website about this that did not come up on google when we were trying to solve this yesterday (Thks J. Biver for finding it)
http://discussions.apple.com/message.js ... 45#2637045
I may be missing something in my description, so be careful...
****Have a 2nd internal bootable drive or the Apple install/panic disc before you do this*****

Thank you. Do you have any idea of where I might find this file if we have already upgraded? 0 -
Canon USB 10.4.7 fix-
http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredriv ... debug.html
download the correct version of the ppc IOUSBFamily.kext, which for my powerbook g4 is the one from 10.4.6
Mac OS X 10.4.6 8I127 IOUSBFamily.kext 2.2.8 for PPC System Update for PPC based systems v 228.4.0
This downloads a package installer and it replaces your 10.4.7 usb controller file with the 4.0 version which does work. Just to be safe I made a backup of the file first, it's in your system/library/extensions folder
I did this successfully and it worked right away.
This way you don't have to worry about permissions and such, as it works just like any other apple updater software.
good luck to all you Canon USB users.

This worked. Thanks. You'd think that with software improvements the old stuff would continue to work. Well, it's a lot to keep track of. 0 -
I've gone through the steps of repairing permissions, then saving a copy of the 10.4.7 IOUSBFamily.kext as a backup, and then trying to install the newly downloaded 10.4.6 version, but everytime i go to hit the install button, it says that there is nothing to install. I've followed the directions pretty exactly. Any suggestions? 0 -
ive tried replacing this and it all replaced and rebooted fine but i could still not get mine to connect either. still getting conection failed. please help if anyone knows 0 -
I followed bendavanza's instructions and downloaded the file from the link. Everything now connects to my ppc powerbook, both with my 20d and 5d. PhaseOne user forum saves the day again.
thanks0 -
Avoid Frustrations, Read The Release Notes after downloading.
You will see that the Canon 30D RAW files are supported in version 3.7.4
You will also see:
Known issues:
Tethered support with the Canon EOS 30D is not supported.

Hi Group,
I downloaded the appropriate IOUS BFamily.kext 2.5.6 file for my PB 1 GHz G4 10.4.7 and found 2 Readmes and 2 IOUSBFamily .pkg files.
The first file is named "IOUSBFamily-256.4.2(PPC).pkg and the readme says: "This is the version of the IOUSBFamily that shipped with 10.4.7 (8J135) for machines with PPC processors. Your current version will not be saved. A restart is required."
The second file is named "IOUSBFamily-256.4.2-log(PPC).pkg. and the readme says" This is the version of the IOUSBFamily that shipped with 10.4.7 (8J135) for machines with PPC processors, but with logging enabled. It will overwrite all the header files associated with the IOUSBfamily. It will install the latest versions of USBProber.app and the tool usblogger. A restart is required. (USBProber.app will install the KLog.kext, if needed, when you click on the "Start" button of the USB Loger pane.)
How do I know which version to install? Thank you for your help.

i've got the same problem as trgstudios, downloaded
Mac OS X 10.4.6 8I12 IOUSBFamily.kext 2.2.8 for PPC System Update for PPC based systems v 228.4.0 as advised by bendavanza
But yet when i attempt to install it, it says there is nothing to install....what gives?0 -
hi anyone at all? 0 -
One thing to note, which I don't think is noted above, and is vital for shooting tethered with the 5d:
You must change the menu setting for Communication to PC Connect.
Racked my brain for a day after completing USB downgrade.0 -

hi, i'll really appreciate it if you could even tell me how to go about doing it. I've tried downgrading and it just goes "CANNOT INSTALL, THERE IS NOTHING TO INSTALL"-i can't even downgrade and i've cross posted to the apple boards but no one's telling me what to do. SImiliarly another person has the same problem as me in here-Trgstudios
I'm using the 20D btw0 -
hello?isn't there anyone who can tell what to do? 0 -
I have updraded both my G5 and Powerbook G4 to 10.4.8 and it has fixed the problem on both. My 5D is now recogized by Capture One Pro. 0 -
I have installed the 10.4.8 update on my IMac G5 1,6 and tethered shooting in C1 and Canon DPP with my 350D works again (on 10.4.7 it didn´t). 😄 0
