I had the exact same problem.
The solution was to choose Window->Workspace and select the Default.
The tool bar then reappeared and the default set in customize also reappeared.

That is a bug, I experience quite frequently. Seems to be difficult to debug.

Not a bug in the software, but perhaps the installation.
The Toolbar would appear this way if there is a corrupt preference that is somehow missing this data. So, the software itself can't load like this from default, it needs something to reference and in all the cases we have seen from this it is just an old or corrupt preference left over from an old installation.

Sorry Drew, that's is definitely a bug. I made a clean install in accordance with the support instructions of Phase One two days ago. This bug popped up immediately after the reinstall. All preferences files were deleted etc., same with any other cache files, daemons and whatever I don't really now. That is a frequent problem!

I appreciate the opinion but sorry to say that is not the case. It cannot inherent to the software.
If you can reproduce this we'd happy to see a support case and have a closer look.

Happens to me a lot on my 64 bit Win 7 machine - feels like a bug to me...

Here we go again, arguing with support. It happens to me as well, now there are several people on this forum all parts of the world, different machine where this problem exists and yet, it is NOT a bug? C'mon Phase One please.... dont force us to changer software. It is a bug.

Drw just for fun, what is the definition of a bug in your understanding? so we know before asking you guys to fix it

By the way I can reproduce it and the system crashes when trying to go back to customized screen. I opened a support case.

Again... let's get specifics and find the source through a support case.
If it were a bug it would be on every machine, all the time, in reproducible scenarios. As we've seen this attributed to unstable OS', corrupt users and lingering corrupt preference files from older installations we're confident we know the source of the cause.
Perhaps your instances are different but we can only know if you give us the opportunity.

Similar experience with the missing toolbar here. Toolbar lost, reappears after setting back to default. Right from the very beginning. I didn't find a reliable way to reproduce it yet, but I'm trying.

Also had another one: the right part of the brushes toolbar was missing, including it's border. Reappeared after setting defaults, too.

The system I am using is a MBPro mid2014. I did not upgrade OS, Yosemite is a fresh install on a erased SSD with new partitions. OS was updated to 10.10.1 right after installation. Installed CO 8.0.2, no earlier CO versions.

I am thinking about placing a support ticket, but I hesitate because I am still missing some reproducibility.

    Regards,
    Hans-B.

I have experienced the same problem. Can't figure out what's causing it.

It would make sense that it is a bug in the installation process. I did not experience the problem until I upgraded From Ver. 7 to Ver. 8.0.
Have not experienced any issues with it since I chose the default workspace. Even after upgrading to Ver. 8.0.2 and Yosemite, it is still fine.

Same issue here. Have completely uninstalled Capture One on numerous occasions including removing all preference and application support files only for toolbar to disappear again within a day or so. Never had this problem with Capture One 7 only since version 8.

Here is the official explanation, not a bug? well maybe except that phase one is blaming Apple. But this is the only software I have that does this.

"The error that you are reporting is related to the preference file of the software. Regardless of a fresh install, there seems to constantly be a cached preference on Mac since 10.9.x. This appears to be quite stubborn and even preference files that no longer relate to Capture One 8, but an older versions or corrupted/deleted prefs, are forced to the software upon launching it should a preference file not be available in the preference folder. This, of course, causes issues with the workspace of the software when it launches and the Window>Default action overwrites this line of the plist. The action to then go back to the customized workspace fails because the preference file that should have been ignored, is now seen as 'corrupt' by Capture One because it doesn't fit. Relaunching the software creates a new preference file and you can move forward.

We had seen this in 10.9.x on rare occasions but it seems more prevalent now with Capture One 8 and it may be that the 10.10.x OS is caching these preferences in another location or even in the root somehow.

The alternative to all of this would be to Rename Capture One itself after deleting the preference file (per step #6 of the uninstall). With the application renamed, the OS does not force a Preference File upon the laucning software as it does not have the same association to the app and thus the issue is avoided.

First thought: What a mess! Second thought: Why does no other application show any problems like that?

Try to help explain the conflict as detailed as possible, get accused of skirting responsibility. No fun.

The case that Alececco submitted and shared here also had rather detailed steps on how to hopefully FIX this issue on the Mac, these were left out. So, its not the whole story as prior to lengthy explanation graciously provided by support there were some steps to try to prevent this from occurring on the Mac. Thus fixing the conflict caused by apples changes.

I can appreciate that this may be the only software showing this error on your system, but researching the fundamentals of this caching issue should turn up quite a few other users and softwares showing similar conflicts. Capture One is not any other software, it is Capture One and we cannot speak for how others handle their preference files, only our own. However, you're not alone in being effected by Apples new found caching "feature" so the suggestion for resolving the the issue from support is the same.
If anyone would like, we're happy to help you too through a support case.

Drew, I have some info that may shed light on this problem.
I have been troubleshooting some problems of my own.
During that, i'm always deleting C1 plists.

After this last deletion I started creating a new catalog.
So, while I'm waiting for C1 to import, I felt it was a good time to clean up files on my other drives. The files are completely unrelated to C1 by the way.
Well after sending the files to the trash, my Mac wouldn't allow me to empty the trash bin as the files were being used.
Turns out that C1 was using the plist that was in the trash bin.

Anyway, if anyone is deleting plists, make sure you empty the trash before restarting C1.
I'm still waiting for my catalog to rebuild so I cannot test my theory.

Files used by an application, any application, are 'owned' by the application when in use. That usage will remain in place as long as the application is open, regardless of where it goes.
A good tip for sure, but not related to this conflict.

But the plists were deleted while the application was closed.
Once the application opens, it normally creates a new plist.
So why would it decide it wants to use the deleted plist instead?

But the effect suggests it wasn't done closing. Just cause and effect.
Again, a good tip but not related here.

    Ok, you lost me!

A simple question! What do I have to do, that C1 behave as expected? A simple answer is appreciated!!!!!

My toolbar is missing as well after updating from C1 7 to 8, then disappeared again at 8.0.1 and again at 8.0.2.

    Go to Window>Workspace>Default.

If the issue persists, Create a support case.

After a crash of CO 8.0.2 I missed the toolbar after restart. Applying the workspace I was using again it was back again. Intermittent issue. I will report this.

Toolbar disappears when the new catalog is opening. When you reopen the default catalog toolbar reappears. 😲
