Can I do this without selecting one image, making the one non-default setting, and then pasting the setting to all the other images?

How else would you propose it be done?
If you make all the adjustments to one image->copy those to the Clipboard->Deselect Clarity->Select All other Images->Apply. You can then process all to a recipe without that one specific change, simply by turning it off in the Copy/Apply process.

In reply to the question: how else would you do this?

I thought that like other products, C1 might provide a way for me to have my own set of default settings, such that once established, I could go from import to process in one step, just as one can obviously do using C1's defaults. Somehow, I thought that the concept of 'preset' would offer a way.

Regarding image adjustments CO5 has defaults and presets.

A default is applied when opening an image for the first time. Currently CO5 has a few defaults which you can set either in the Preferences (target levels) or with the tool (Sharpening, Noise Reduction tools). Perhaps more defaults can be set in the future but that's it for now.

A preset is a particular value or set of values (depending on the tool) that you can save with a friendly name you can easily remember and apply later at any time. This however requires an action from the user and is not applied on import or first opening.

In the CO5 Pro department there are a few additional enhancements in this area when shooting tethered (with a cable) or creating and applying a Style which glues adjustments of miscellaneous tools in one kind of preset.

Many thanks. I consider my question to have been fully answered. I will put my preset in place, and use it when I import new images.
