Yes....I have the same problem. Why do you have a TRASH in catalog but unable to use at all? 😕 😕 😕

Only images stored within the catalog can go into the catalog trash. Referenced images can't go in there.

Coming from Aperture and Lightroom, i have been through the same "Why can't i use the trashcan".

And the workflow i adapted from lightroom is this.

    1. In the library tab, click "none" in the filter section, showing only "un-colored" images.
    2. Mark the image "red", it then disappears from your viewer, although it is still present in the catalog.
(I have mapped "colortag red" to my "x" key, which resembles "reject image" in lightroom).
    3. Go to "All images" in the library tool tab, and click "red" in the filter section. So you only see the red tagged images, and hit backspace or choose right click "move to trash".
    4. Right click the trashcan and choose "Empty".

Pretty complicated workflow, when you are a former aperture user.
But both Lightroom and C1 would probably describe this as being flexible and making he program advanced, so this is the simplest solution i have yet to come up with.

Since there are several steps, i only mark my images red, and then once in a while, when i feel like spring cleaning, i go through point 3 & 4.

Hope this helps, and if anyone has a better workflow, i am all ears 😉

    Best...Jan

thanks for the trash workflow. wait... we need a workflow for placing a image in the trash?? 🤓

Has anyone considered mass pre-selection so that images that will end up in the trash are not imported in the first place?

That would reduce the scale of the challenge - for those who are challenged.

    Thats an idea.

But! - even though you do the mass pre-selection, sometimes you could find yourself in the situation, where you would have to delete images from the catalog. And then you would have to select and remove them from your collection. Locate them in "all images" and remove them, and then finally empty trash.

A menu item/right click option "move to trash", would still be an easy feature to implement, and would speed up the process, no?

Or ... why not just implement a simple "drag to trash" feature like the rest of the world? 😉

Why risk the insecurity of dragging when there are keyed shortcuts available?

Personally I hate dragging stuff across a screen. Far to much potential for something to go wrong - especially with a rather critical and difficult to reverse activity.

I say that even though I can drag a file from the Browser to the System trash can using Windows ... but then I use sessions not catalogues so have much less internal control type "baggage" that needs to be considered. Whether that is a factor or not I don't know.

For the same reason we can select images in a Recent Imports folder and drag them into an Album.

I don't see the insecurity of dragging selected images around. If they land in the wrong spot then a Command-Z (undo) should reverse it. To really delete something I have to empty the trash. Having a two step process of dragging and emptying to delete something should catch the "oops!" moments.
