Opening already imported file from outside C1
I use Adobe Bridge for much of my workflow. I have set it so that I can open a raw file in CaptureOne Express 12 Fujifilm.
For a new image, it is imported and is presented in C1 immediately for me to edit.
But if it is a file that I have previously imported, CaptureOne says that the import failed as it is already in the catalog. This is correct, but then C1 fails to navigate to the image that I want to edit. It seems to give up as soon as it determines that the image is already imported. Consequently I have to search for that image manually in C1.
Is there any way to select an (imported) image outside of C1 (either in Bridge, or even in Windows Explorer) and have C1 open it for editing?

I think it is highly unlikely that any third party program will have the capability to do this. In order to do what you want it would have to be constantly scanning the C1 database.0 -

I'm sorry - I didn't explain my issue clearly enough.
Third party programs like Bridge can already open C1 and pass it an image name without looking at the C1 catalog. (In the same way that C1 itself can Open With or Edit With other applications without knowing about their databases.) Similarly Windows Explorer can use File Associations to open a file in C1.
My issue is how C1 behaves when it is launched with (or associated with) with a filename that is already imported. This behavior can easily be simulated within C1 itself. From File / Import, browse to and import an image that you already know has been imported. C1 shows an error saying that file is already imported, but it does not give any option to take the user to that image in the catalog, which would be extremely helpful in my case.0 -
Is your the file in the Catalog a Managed or referenced file? 0 -
My files are referenced. 0 -
Using Windows File associations would probably work with the Pro versions (which do not rely on a restricted catalog as their only means of operation) of C1.
If you set the default file association of your original file to open C1 directly (in a session using a Pro version) I would guess that you would get what you want.
I don't have any experience of Bridge (or any other recent Adobe photo manipulation based product) but I think the Windows principle is probably the defining requirement.
Maybe someone else will chip in to the comments and confirm or deny.

I agree the Windows principle is the defining requirement - well put.
I have the default Windows file association to open C1 Express as you mention. If (in Windows Explorer) I double-click a raw file, C1 launches and it immediately invokes the Import dialog.
If the file has not previously been imported, I can choose to import it and edit it. Great!
But if the file has already been imported, the import fails, with no quick way to get to that imported image (or even to the Import batch that contained it.)
If Pro handles this better than Express that would be good. I'm a newcomer to C1 with Express and am considering upgrading to Pro - this would help ease my transition. (I could install Pro as a trial I suppose but I'd want to be able to get back to Express in the event I decide against it.)
If someone with Pro can test opening raw files from Windows Explorer I'd appreciate hearing about it.0 -

I use C1 in Session mode and may not fully understand the limitations imposed by an express version in catalog mode. The following is a bit clunky, but it may perhaps serve as a workaround until you find a better way (if it works at all, that is 😊 ).
1) Get the name of the file you want C1 to open into the Windows Clipboard (mark/highligt the file name and hit Ctrl+C).
2) Open the relevant catalog in C1
3) Use the C1 Library and click the three dots in the Filters search field
4) Add a Search Criteria, pick "Display Name" and "equals" and paste the file name from the Windows Clipboard into the last (rightmost) field. C1 appears to be a little picky, make sure there is no file name extension. If the full file name is abcd-1234.tiff, try abcd-1234 (.tiff removed).0 -
To rub salt in the wound, I see that C1 offers an "Open With" feature that opens an image for editing in e.g. Adobe Raw, or Corel Aftershot Pro, but C1 does not itself gracefully handle being the target of an Open With operation from an external action. 0
