Shift colors on exported tiffs
Hi,
I have a problem with colors with exported tiffs...
If I export an clean new variant from an edited raw file and then I apply again the modifications i had in the edited
raw to the tiff file i have a shift on colors and a slight shift in contrast, I have also noticed that the tiff is noiser.
I usually export tiff 16bit in ProPhoto
here an image to illustrate:
it seems something related to color profile but I can't figure it out, any suggestion?
thank you,
Alessandro

When you adjust and export a RAW file, contrast and noise reduction is applied using subpixel information combined with profiled camera dynamics and color range. Then it is exported into a tiff with the color profile of your choice.
When you export an unadjusted RAW file into tiff with the color profile of your choice, subpixel information is gone.Original camera dynamics and color range are gone, too. When the adjustments of the RAW file are applied now, contrast is less accurate, noise reduction less effective, and everything is done on different color information.
I'm not surprised about different results.

So basically they use two different color spaces right?
If I understand well the adjustments of the edited raw file in C1 are remapped on a different color space that the tiff has (?)
No way to keep the workflow consistent?
I'm wondering what is the best approach when I have to export images in PS for adjustments (most of the time just cloning)...is it better to do it at the beginning of the workflow or after adjustments in C1?
thank you for your reply,

Hi Ian,
Yes I have the latest version 9.3 but I think that the pdf is related to a round trip on the same file, my problem is different (have a look at the image on the first post)...If I have a clean new variant (F7) of a raw file that I edited in C1, I export the clean copy to PS and make some editing (no colors, just cloning) then I open the tiff in C1 and copy/paste the adjustments I had on the original edited raw to the new tiff I have a mismatch in colors and contrast/noise...
thanks for the reply!

Hi aleguida,
I've tried it, comparing exported raw, adjusted in tiff with exported adjusted raw. There is a very slight shift in my image, but not more than I expected.
If you suspect a bug or issue, contact Phase One and file a support case. http://support.phaseone.com will take you directly to the support part.[quote="aleguida" wrote:

The raw image contains sensor specific values. They are mapped to the original colors. Camera color space.
Capture One puts it on your monitor. Monitor color space.
On export, you define the color space that has to be used in your exported tiff image and CO calculates the tiff pixel values for the exported color space. Your defined color space.
They are all different. There's a lot of translation done between them.[quote="aleguida" wrote:

I don't know exactly how CO works internally, but I guess they are just applied.[quote="aleguida" wrote:

The workflow can be just the same.
But RAW information and tiff information are completely different. I already mentioned the (loss of) subpixel information. I'm sure the math behind it is different, too. So applying exactly the same adjustments for noise and contrast on 2 completely different sets of image data using different algorithms simply doesn't result in equal final images.[quote="aleguida" wrote:

I prefer to work with the best image data I have for as long as I can. My workflow is simple:
+ develop and adjust in CO
+ retouch in AP or PS
+ print

Dear Hans,
thank you for your kind reply.
I sent a ticket to the Phase One support let's see...as you told it is probably due to the different color spaces.

The raw and tiffs are so different in nature, that it is not possible to apply the same adjustments to a raw and a bitmap.
My suggestion is to make all the toning/grading work first in CO on the raw, and then do your remaining cloning and so on in PS.
Quality-wise, this is also the best approach, as you get the most out of the raw file this way (more bits remaining).0 -
Dear Christian,
thank you for the reply, I hope that in the future the cloning ability in CO will be better...that would also solve my problem to go back and forth between CO and PS 😊0
