copying a project as a template
Is there a way to copy a project including the the albums and smart albums it contains?
I'd like to have a project template which includes my standard albums for ingesting. This is how my workflow is:
In a project I have to create these albums:
- Captures (album with all raw-data)
- Selects (album where I manually put the selects after finishing the selection-process)
- Output (album for the pictures to further process later on, e.g. for a photo-book)
- to select (smart album with all pictures without color-tag)
- selected (smart album with all pictures with green or yellow color-tag)
- Trash (smart album with all pictures with red color-tag)
After finishing the selection process, I usually delete the pics in the Trash-album, move the selected ones to the Selects-album and delete the now empty smart-albums)
Instead of creating this structure every time from scratch it would be great to be able to copy an empty project already containing it.
Any ideas how to achieve this?

I assume you mean Session here?

Easiest would be to create an empty project and keep it as your master then copy that.0 -
thanks for the suggestion, but I need the template for my catalog-workflow.
Should have been more precise with this.0 -
Making a Catalog Template allows you to create a new catalog with a predetermined set of User Collections, instead of starting from scratch. This may be a valuable time saving exercise if you adopt a complex hierarchy of User Collections. Nested Albums, Smart Albums complete with rules (search criteria and active filters), Projects and Groups are all duplicated from within the open catalog.
Open a catalog and navigate to the Library tool with a set of User Collections that you intend to copy. Select File>Save As Template... A dialog box will open to save the file.
Choose a suitable name for the Template. Select Save.
From the Library, click on the + (plus) with reveal icon (top right) and select New Catalog… Or select File>New Catalog...(shortcut Shift+Cmd+N). A dialog box will appear.
Select an appropriate name for the new Catalog, select a location for the Catalog to be saved to (or choose to retain the existing location) and select the appropriate Template from the drop-down menu.
Check mark the box underneath to open the new catalog alongside the already open Catalog, or uncheck to close the existing Catalog and open the new one.
Note. No images are copied into the Catalog when creating a Template.0 -
this works for creating a new catalog. My workflow is based on a single catalog. When importing a new shooting in this catalog I would like to use a project-template with a standard set of collections to facilitate the selection process.
Thanks anyway for the response!

You're a braver man than me!
I haven't found catalogues to be terribly robust and I'd suggest you follow David Grover's example and manage your projects as sessions an import once complete:

My workflow was like yours in Aperture with smart albums showing what's not keyworded etc, but I'm happy with sessions for work in progress now.0 -
Johannes,
I use sessions as I often shoot events and they are natural situations for the session concept.
So I am with David Edge and David Grover on this.
I think using the session to import and edit makes most sense since there seems to be no real need to work with an entire catalogue just for working in the latest images. Once done I would assume that importing the session to the master catalogue, should you wish to, would allow you to achieve what you want to achieve. However I have not looked at that functionality so I am guessing.
HTH.

Thank you guys for the suggestions. I think you are right and this would be the best approach at the moment. I will give it a try.
Best regards Johannes0
