Import to Catalog Process slow to start

I am finding that when I attempt to import to the catalog, that the time to start is very slow. I have about 35k images in the catalog and am adding another 800 images from another directory. It took about 15-20 minutes before the system started importing. During that time the system was frozen, and there were no indications that something was happening. Is this normal?
