Can you define the hardware specifically?
There are older devices made by Wacom that even they no longer support.

It seems quite sluggish and clunky with my Intuos 3.

Can vary pen size, but transition from just registering a mark to a nearly full brush width is pretty instantaneous. When the brush first makes a mark, there is little feathering at the edges, even with 0 set.

Possibly, my skill level needs to improve, it doe however feel very different from CS4 where I can get smooth response and brush width.

I also use intuos 3 on a 64 bit windows 7 system with CO 6.1. I have the problem that when pressing the tip of my pen to the board it works like right-clicking. I was able to turn it off in windows but sadly it still works in Capture One.

seems to work properly here...works better with newer tablet, as do all apps...

...however, responding to the initial post....when you say varying degrees of opacity other than edges, I don't think that is the function of the mask. You can feather the edges of the mask with the hardness control, but I belive the area masked is either 100% or 0%. Comparing it to PS, most like the freeze mask in the Liquify tool...

Intuos 3 for me too and pen pressure does not respond.
Has anyone opened a support case?
