Keywording tutorials for EM2 newbie
Hi there
I am about to embark on the task of setting up EM2 to do my keywording. I'm normally ok with learning new software, but very much a newbie with EM2 and its terminology.
Having watched the video clips they don't seem to cover applying keywords in a manner ready for submission to an image library. I've searched via google, but not found anything to help me learn how to do this most effectively. This situation cannot be unusual, given that it is a prime function of the software, so I am somewhat perplexed that I can't find somewhere explaining how to do it!
So please can someone point me to a tutorial, or series of tutorials which would enable me to get this show on the road?
I have about 2500 images to keyword, so you can see that it makes sense to get a good system in place.
Ideally I am looking to set up a series of presets which can be applied to a group of images to reduce the amount of time I have to spend keywording individual images. I am prepared to invest time at the outset in order to create an easier future life! I envisage this will mean layering the keyword presets from initially the fundamental, then becoming more specialist so that there are several tiers, with manual fine tuning being the last stage. I discovered in CS4 that it is easier to delete than type them in!
I've also 300 keywords from my image library and have these in both word and an alphabetical list in Excel with no repeats. I'd like to be able to use these, without having to type them all in manually! Expect that I could probably assign these to one image in CS4, import into EM2 catalogue and then work from there.
The images are primarily coastal shots. Recent ones are digital in C1Pro but there are a good number which were shot on 5x4 film, scanned and then adjusted in Photoshop. EM2 has picked up existing keywords I've used on some images, but these weren't done as well as I might and were done using CS4 Bridge.
Many thanks
Baxter

Hello Baxter,
I think 'The DAM book' from Peter Krogh should help you, it's covering this issue good. ().
Also you can find a lot of information on the DAM book forum () and dpbestflow (), especialy the topic about keywording ().
In general it's best to keyword in large groups when possible (all photo's > copyright information, a lot of photo's per country, etc).
Put only subjectinformation about the images in the keywords. Organisational information is best put into 'Catalog Sets' (as they called in Expression Media). Information about the customer or application i.e.
Last tip: Put information in dedicated fields if possible. Do not put everything in Keywords.
Names of persons could best be placed in the 'People' field, names of locations in the 'Place Finder' field.
In Expression Media you can add keywords to images different ways. One is to type them in per image with the 'Info' pane opened but this is only suitable for smal amount of images (the highest rated i.e.).
More Easy is to open the 'Organize' Pane and drag/drop big groups of images onto the right Keywords/People/Locations.
The List view you can modify so you can see wich images are 'forgotten'.
I hope this information is usefull. Succes with your project.

Fantastic stuff Roelof
Thanks very much indeed. I'll order the book and spend some time visiting those websites too.
I'll certainly put data in the other fields too, but am required by the image library to follow certain policies and practices and place most of the information in the keywords field.
Using as large a groups as I can was what I had in mind. Then new images ought to be easy to load with data as I come back from a shoot.
Many thanks
