Canon 5D White Balance

I am using Capture One Le version 3.7.3. Since I upgraded to this version, the auto white balance selector appears to be malfunctioning. Whenever I choose \"auto\" WB, I get the same WB setting as I do for as \"shot\". This occurs when the camera set white balance (in bold) is not set on auto, but on cloudy, for example. I realize that they might be the same on occasion, but not every time. If I put the same photo in to Canon's DPP, their software fuctions correctly giving me a different WB value for \"auto\" versus \"shot\".

    Bearmann,

    The 'Magic Wand' icon or a Ctrl + W is the method to Auto White Balance an image, Not from the pulldown options.

    If you are doing this correctly, then we will have to dig into this deeper.

    The Capture One eyedropper (magic wand) is functioning correctly. That is Phase One's interpretation of the WB which is dependant on where I click. However, if I choose auto from the pull down menu, I should get the 5D's interpretation of the white balance recorded by the camera at the time the photo was taken. It should be no different than if I had set the WB on auto and snapped the photo. Interestingly, my old files from my 10D will correctly show the auto WB in Capture One, but not the 5D.

    There is the Eyedropper with which you select an area within the image for setting WB.
    Then there is the Magic Wand or Ctrl + W which you click to have Capture One do an AUTO WB on an image. This is the icon that is at the WB tab in between the pulldown and the Apply this white balance to...

    At the pulldown, unless you actually did set in-camera WB to AUTO, you do not get an Auto WB by selecting Auto. On some other camera models, unless you set in-camera AUTO, this is not even a choice in the pulldown. The program needs the Auto data from the meta data to know what it was. This is because an in-camera Auto WB can vary depending on model - from 3,000 - 7,500 Kelvin This is why many believe the Auto setting should never be used because it can produce very inconsistent results.

    One more question. If auto was selected in camera, and then I use the magic wand in C1, will C1 do it's own WB, or will it default to the one done by the 5D at the time of exposure?

    The Magic Wand does an Auto WB on an image in Capture One no matter the in-camera setting. Sometimes it does an outstanding job and on some tricky images it does a miserable job.
    With an in-camera Auto WB and selecting the pulldown of Auto (or Shot), the meta data is read to establish WB from camera. You'll notice the pulldown displays the in-camera setting in bold. and of course it shows in the meta data.
