Deleting / merging old backups

An incremental backup would be a very nice idea!

    There is a workaround, though.

The largest part of a catalog "file" are the previews. If you open the catalog file ("Show Package Contents") you see a "Cache" folder. I *assume* that you can safely delete this folder. Well, I did so once in order to transport a multi-GB catalog, and C1 didn't complain. It just started rebuilding the previews.

Might be a nice enhancement to offer an option to exclude the previews in the "Back up now" dialog box.

    HTH,
    Peter.

    Hi Marc,

now that I'm on my computer I see that C1's backup doesn't include the previews (I should have known, it's simply too much). It does however contain the local adjustment masks and that does take up some space.

Now, there are quite a lot of backup programs out there that can do incremental backups (like Time Machine which comes with your mac) or CCC, or a cloud-based one like CrashPlan (which I'm using).

Sigh, we old Aperture-aficionado's didn't realise how good it really was... (except C1's image quality is way better).

    Cheers,
    Peter.

    Hi Peter,

I keep only the 10 last backups or so, as the older ones are useless.
I have ordered C1 to backup my catalog (without the previews, as already mentioned) once a week. You can choose your backup preferences in "preferences" 😊
Be careful that if you erase your previews, it could take some time to recreate them (a full night for about 15,000 images), and it is compulsory to let C1 finish the work, otherwise you could have misfunctioning for a while.

It so happens that my computer crashed today after I posted my initial enquiry and I wasn't able to open the catalogue I had been working on for several hours (15,000 pictures from Myanmar)... I was not able to get anything from Time Machine either. I was "saved" by my previous backups - but lost five hours of work... So what's the best way to save work on a continuous basis ? Close out Capture One every hour and save ? 🤓

15,000 pictures in 5 hours !! I understand that you were selecting the best of your Myanmar shots, starring some and deleting others. For 15,000 pictures and a lot of work already done, you can go, when you like and need, to:
File (main menu bar) -> Backup Catalog...

15,000 is the size of the catalogue, not what I get done in 5 hours LOL...
Thanks for the backup tip, I had forgotten the obvious !
