Questions about Barrel Distortion with Pana rw2-files
Hello,
I'm new to this forum, as I didn't have any problems to discuss so far with C1 and my equipment, but the day has finally come π
Are there any Micro-Four-Third-users here who can help me get my head around a question I have?
So I switched from DSLR to m43, mainly for portability reasons (trekking in the mountains really is easier with a small camera...). As I am also a fan of videography, I decided to get the Panasonic Lumix DHC-G6 for its video capabilities and handling.
So far I am impressed by the usability and the resulting image quality, it's just what I was hoping for.
BUT: The lens correction tools in CO7 are completely disabled, and I have a kind-of tech-related question regarding this.
After I stumbled upon those disabled lens sliders, I googled for tips, and one post on DPReview says that m43 cameras embed lens correction data in the RAW-file's Metadata, so it is being applied automatically in most commercial post-processing tools. Meaning: The adjustment sliders are turned off, but under the hood, distortion correction IS still happening.
After reading that, I took a picture in JPG+RAW mode with the 14-42 kit lens, openend both versions in C1, and noticed that the RAW-image has a slight distortion. Nothing too serious, especially for someone like me, who mostly does landscape photography.
My actual questions:
- Is there really something happening "under the hood" in C1 with the embedded correction data, as suggested by the DPReview post (mind you, the post didn't specifically mention C1, it was talking about "commercial tools" in general)? Or is there only a slight distortion because the lens simple does not distort very much?
- Is there a way to manually download/add lens profiles to C1, to make the lens tools work?
- Is there an alternative way to correct that hand full of images where the distortion bugs me, without spending more money on a second tool? Any trick in C1 directly would be great, but any other suggestions are also appreciated π
Thanks, and sorry for the lengthy text!
Markus

Hi, welcome to the forum. Some answers to your questions.
If in the Lens Correction tool, Profile drop-down list, you find Generic, and all sliders are set to zero, no correction is applied. If it lists From File, correction is applied from metadata found in the raw file.
There are no manual downloads for adding lens profiles (at least not as far as I know of).
You can manually correct distortion with the sliders, and copy these adjustments to other images. Even smarter, you could save these adjustments first in a Preset and have it always at hand for later use.0 -
Hello Paul, and thanks for the reply.
I will check if there's something saying "From File" in the tool later, I'm not at home right now.
But the main problem is that the sliders as well as the Lens drop down menu are completely disabled, so there's not even the possibility to manually correct the distortion, I can't even pick a "Generic" lens to do this (which I find a little odd, to be honest). That's why I am looking for an alternative way to do it.
I'll get back to this topic later when I checked back at home what the tool says exactly.
Thanks already!0 -
The Panasonic G6 is only preliminary supported so far. That means that we are still working on the implementing all features of CO for this camera. 0 -
Cool, so there's something in the pipeline. Sounds great! Thanks for the info βοΈ π 0
