Extremly slow
We installed Version 4.6.3 to handle pictures from a 5D Mark II and it is extremly slow.
The PC is a 3GHz Dual Core with 4GB Ram (3GB usable), XP Pro SP3. Plus a extra fast harddisk for caching.
All other programs run very fast. All our pictures are stored on a server. We have a gigabit network with about 30MB/s transfer rate.
We checked all settings, but the cache or preview folders are not configurable.
When we select a raw picture it lasts 3-4 seconds before it is completely shown on the screen. So only to have a look at for example 30 pictures, you need 2-3 Minutes.
When we want to crop a picture, it lasts 1-2 seconds only to see the frame we want to
adjust.
The processor is used 20-30%. The network 2% used. Why is it so slow?
Capture one 3 runs with lightspeed compared to that.

Do you know the specific processor model, or at least the family it is from. There have been quite a few 3GHz dual core processors, and not all can run CO4 efficiently especially with that file size. 0 -
To rule out the network or network share as a potential cause, what happens to performance when you have your raw files on a local disk? 0 -
The prozessor is a Athlon 64 X2 Dual 6000+.
XP says: 3 GHz, 3,2 GB Ram.
When i copy the raw files to a local disk, speed is normal.
It is not practical for us to copy all raw files from our server to local disks for editing and then back to the server. With 3.7 everything works well over the network.
Why is 4.6 now so slow over the network? I thought it is a program for professionals?0 -
It seems your problem has to do with the network or server and how CO4.x handles that, not your local workstation. Can you perhaps give more details about that? I might try to copy your setup, curious to see what happens.
As you already noted, CO4 stores the previews with the cache files, hence generating more network traffic. However, with a 1 Gbit Ethernet connection, I find it hard to believe the network becomes saturated. Also note that CO 4.6.3 might regenerate your previous the first time, resulting in bad performance once.0 -
I used to build my own Athlon systems, and what frustrated me the most were the chipsets that ran the AMD line. Sometimes I built a system that on paper was a great system, but in reality was a dog. Depending on the motherboard used, the built-in networking controller could use a decent mount of system resources as well, taking away from other tasks. If you are using the onboard networking controller, my guess is your processor can't handle both tasks efficiently. What you might try (i know it will be a pain) is purchase a separate network card and install it on one of the PCI slots. Separate cards do not require the resources onboard controllers do.
Also, just to make certain, you are hardwired to your network correct, and not wireless.
