D2x Previews Soft

I've been working with CaptureOne for the last 3 years with a D1x, 1Ds, 10D, 1D mk II, 1Ds mk II, and now with the D2x.

The D2x previews in version 3.7 final appear \"soft\" even when the \"simulate sharpening setting\" button is pressed. They are soft to the point of thinking the images are out-of-focus. When going to the \"Focus\" tab however the image is sharp.

Is there something different with the D2x NEF?

    This is the first we've been asked about this issue. We talked about what you may be seeing and we believe it is due to the pixels being smaller on the CMOS chip of the D2x. It is this microscopic technology on today's sensors that is likely the reason your Preview images appear soft. As you noted, using the Focus Tool truly tells the tale regarding Sharpness, and this tool is where you should put your faith rather than a Preview.

    Eric Michelson of US Support offers these thoughts:

    If D2X has more megapixels in the same area that means that the pixels are smaller and might be beyond the resolution of the lens to image.
    As pixels get smaller the lens just cannot focus a point of light small enough to cover a single micron. It may cover several pixels but all those pixels imaging the same little point of light create a soft image. It can vary with the lens, and it can vary with fstop of the same lens
    Lenses have one fstop around which they are sharpest.

    Thanks for your reply. However, it has nothing to do with the chip of pixel size. It has to do with the sharpening algorythm applied to the CaptureOne previews. It appears that the sharpening is not \"as strong\" of with the other camera models.

    No matter the origin, a scaled down / resized image should ALWAYS be sharp if the original is sharp. The opposite is not true however.
