The only reason I'm replying is that I'm a current Mac user - have been for 20+ years. I will say, there is another option for Capture One Pro that isn't a $5,000 iMac Pro, or 2013 black Mac Pro, nor the upcoming modular Mac Pro.

I'm building my own PC with an 8-core 7820X CPU and a video card with and EVGA GeForce 1060 6GB video card and 32GB of ram. ...for $2,250. I could build a Ryzen 7 $1,980.

I'm officially on a budget, and Apple's pricing doesn't work for me. Not when there are other options where I can get more computer for less $$$. The thing I like is, I can always upgrade the GPU the following year. Add more internal storage, add more memory.

I still have my Laptop and 2009 Mac Pro - the latter will be repurposed into a storage and back-up server.

However, I don't use FCPX or any other Apple Apps that keep married to Apple's ecosystem for a workstation. I only use C1P, PS, Photo Mechanic, and few other photography apps that work on Windows.

All of my other Apple related stuff, like iTunes, will be perfectly fine on my MacBook Air.

    YMMV.

I can't help noticing though the number of unfortunate CO10 users who are experiencing sluggish performance because of the extra pixels in the 5K display.

In the hope of clarifying the situation I would like to ask if anyone using a mac with similar specs to the above is experiencing good or even great performance with CO10.

If there are no replies then do I have to conclude that since all new 27 inch macs have 5K displays then an iMac pro at twice the price is now a system requirement for an enjoyable experience with Capture One?

The 5K takes a lot away from the GPU, hence I question the effectiveness of the OpenCL.. I also notice other users having quite some issues with the new iMac and some were even doing a complete C1P delete and reinstall based of the C1P guidelines. 5K Might need a minimum of the i7 CPU..The technical Staff is very silent about the 2017 iMac.. I am going to save up more to eventually buy the iMac Pro.. The heat spikes with the i7 are alarming.. I also run FCPX and so far I don't use 5K - H265 HEVC codec and will stick with the 1080p H264 instead.

I also acquired the Tangent Elements devices and this is another load to the CPU whilst using simultaneous adjustments.
Good for you by building your own,..

I have same system. It works perfectly. C1 has done a lot of work toward solving the pixel problem and from 10.1 on has gotten much better. Go ahed and buy the system. You will love it

Have a decent amount of images on a fast external drive and go test it before you buy. If you ask nicely and seriously an Apple store might let you have a go when not busy.

Thanks everyone for some very useful replies.
I will look for a way to try before I buy.

I have the basic 2015 5K with this card: AMD Radeon R9 M290 2048 MB and 32 GB ram. I shoot with a canon 5dsr, so I am working on large raw files. I keep all of my catalogs on a G technology USB 3 external drive that spins at 7200 RPM. It all works fine. I can bulk process a number of images at the same time with no slow down in speed.

Thanks Bob. I am feeling better already.

I have a late 2015 5K iMac with 4GHz i7, 24GB of ram, 1TB Fusion internal drive and an external SSD. AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB graphics card.
The COP files go on the SSD.

I'm quite satisfied with COP 10 performance, as long as for large libraries (>10,000 images) I remove the filters tool from the Library tab.

The only thing I would do different is replace the 1TB Fusion drive - it's OK but not great because of the smallish SSD.
I'd replace it with eitther an SSD or the the 2TB Fusion drive.

I have just visited my local Apple retailer who kindly loaded the free Sony version of CO from a USB stick which I took along.
The iMac was the lowest spec 2017 model.
Whatever I tried, doing crazy adjustments with the sliders as fast as I could, the viewer kept up with no significant lag.
When I had finished playing I realised that the application had been running from the USB stick and not from the fusion drive.
I think that I will stop worrying. Thanks to everyone for their constructive comments and suggestions.

The only problem i am seeing with my iMac (the one on my signature) is drawing masks and poor OpenCL performance. It is due the fact that the GPU (even in the 2017) model is not enough to drive 5k screen and have spare power for OpenCL.

I have the 2017 27" 5K iMac, 3.8GHz i5 CPU, Radeon Pro 580 GPU, 24 Gb RAM and 521GB SSD with Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra. I am currently using a Nikon D750.

I have no issues with C1 10.2 and C1 is using hardware acceleration with Open CL. The display truly is fabulous. I love the way my images are displayed and C1 has no problem handling all those pixels. I am happy . I moved from a 2006 2.6Ghz dual quad core Mac Pro. The iMac is smoother and faster but not blazingly so.

I have my C1 catalog on the SSD and my images on a G Drive with USB C connectivity.

EDIT : Just ran a very simple test. I turned off hardware acceleration in the preferences and restarted C1 and adjusted a couple of sliders : Shadows, Highlights, Contrast. With hardware acceleration off the effect of those sliders on the image occurred in two stages. With hardware acceleration on, it happened in one stage and was noticeably faster.

I am running C1 on 5k late 2015 4ghz R395.. after I disabled the opencl, both options..it is running much faster...I believe the problem is in the C1 optimization for these cards...as LR is running blazing fast with GPU acceleration turned ON...

I've just upgraded to the iMac 27" 5K 2017, and I've upgraded the OS to 10.13.

my Canon 1Dm3's photos are only 10 million pixels, but I'm not seeing any problems or slow-downs with C1P yet.

the 5K monitor is incredible (to someone who has been using a 23" Cinema Display for the last 10 years). every hair on my subjects is sharply displayed. it'll take some getting used to the huge size of this display for non-photo/video use though.

    cheers.

I have an i7 5K iMac and when loading 500+ files (both Canon or Fuji) it is still troublesome. It has improved in latest release but its rendering slows 50% of the time still. Latest Adobe CC 18 has fixed this rendering problem but C1P has always played catch up. Latest versions says it improves performance, inc RAF but it is still not good enough. It cannot be just GPU as Adobe seem to have fixed it in LR CCC. I think Phaseone need to consider photographers who work untethered e.g. Social more with their builds and then they will have a perfect product. Waiting anything from .5sec to 1 sec on rendering is a long time in social photography.

I read, that high sierra niw officially supports external gpus, so you can buy a rig with some super gpu and connect via thunderbolt...can someone try this? Since i have no spare money 😊

This discussion is encouraging to me because I want to replace my old 2008 Mac Pro (dual quad core, 15GB RAM with old SATA drives driving a Cinema Graphics display). I want to replace it with an iMac or iMac pro with 5K display. Currently, my catalog is about 96GB and has over 55,000 referenced images about half of which are Canon (5D Mark 3) Raw files and it is rather speedy even on my almost 10 year old Mac Pro with CO 10.2. It takes just over a minute to load the catalog. It can take a second or two to render imported images or display a preview at full resolution. I have not seen any decrease in speed as my catalog doubled in size, except for displaying ALL IMAGES, which takes 3-4 min when first selected. Thereafter this is much faster. I concluded that the size of the catalog is not going to affect speed with a 5K display, except for going from one image to another in an album, rendering and making adjustments.

The test would be to load a trial version of CO 11 onto the iMac or iMac Pro at the Apple store and load my database and referenced files from an external drive. If it works well with an external hard drive, it would work even better with an internal SSD. One person in this discussion found this approach showed good performance, but did not mention the impact of catalog size.

The other question is how best to approach the Apple store staff. I presume it is best to make an appointment and tell them what I need to do.
