Metadata Sync
I find that C1 becomes very unreliable (multiple hangs on a session on an external drive) when I set the Preferences to carry out a full metadata sync. Once I changed the Preference back to Load, this issue appeared to disappear. Has anyone else noticed this or is there an obvious fix I should be applying?

So first - Mac Mini's aren't really considered to be up to spec for most Capture One operations - the hardware just isn't particularly high end so... some performance issues are to be expected.
Having said that...I have also noticed a performance hit when working in full sync mode. I need it for my workflow so I've sort of just been dealing with it - but all of my active/in progress sessions stay on my SSD working drive so it hasn't been horrible - but given that the only thing going on is that Capture is reading/writing metadata I don't really understand why the performance hit is so noticeable. We're just reading & writing to tiny text files, it shouldn't be terribly processor intensive.
Of course, I've also noticed that C1 takes an unusually long time (compared to other programs such as Bridge or PhotoMechanic) to do things like bulk file renames or just search by filename. Things that are pretty effortless for other applications and basic functionality.
Anyway - If you aren't working on a SSD on your machine I recommend it. It doesn't "solve" this particular problem but the difference processing speed is pretty impressive.0 -

I, too, need Full Sync for my workflow and use an SSD as primary work drive. I am not so sure, though, whether it’s weird Capture One gobbles up this much CPU cycles when "syncing†compared to its competitors. Lightroom comes to mind; Adobe disables the setting “automatically write metadata to XMP†by default. Turn it on, and you’ll experience a considerable performance hit, at least on Macs.
My guess is: XMP sidecars might be tiny and reading/writing trivial, but …
… not too long ago, PCs locked up completely when putting in a CD/DVD until the OS was done with the whole I/O stuff
… the software needs to have some sort of timer/counter to decide when to check for changes or update XMP sidecars
… some OS like OSX have tasks running in the background which might get triggered by file changes, e.g. Spotlight indexing, setting Timemachine backup flags and so on
With Lightroom, I had worked around the problem by disabling automatic XMP updates and hitting CMD+S when done with my work. What I think CaptureOne should feature is MediaPro’s “Export annotations†feature, or some other way to manually sync metadata to XMP sidecars / embedded metadata blocks. It’s quite possible there already exists a manual sync in CO 7.1, but if yes, I haven’t found it yet.

I know that Mac Minis aren't the bees knees for processing (although this 2012 version was as good as an iMac for most things and with a more suitable suite of connections), but as an amateur (although hopefully not dilettante) I don't need a Mac Pro yet (I don't shoot Phase One backs for example). Image processing is acceptably fast for my needs.
However, metadata sync has always been problematic for me, both on this machine and my previous iMac. Metadata load behaves impeccably by contrast, especially when I prefer XMP data. My solution has been to go back to Media Pro to handle all metadata and use C1 sessions to manipulate the files, loading metadata from MP. This seems a relatively robust workflow and keywording is just easier in MP anyway. MP can also handle the X3F files from my Sigmas, which C1 can't (yet?).
I don't know about manual syncing of data (a good suggestion), but one thought might be to leave the metadata preference to (say) load in order to pick up what is already there and then force a metadata sync using the dropdown menu item from the metadata tool tab. Just a theory, I haven't tried it.
