I'm not familiar with this however i do know that the Hierarchy is maintained when the photo is opened in Lightroom. So, the option is compatible with LR. (you have to synchronise the metadat into the image first of course)

I just downloaded a trial version of Lightroom 5 for Mac to test this. I do not see any hierarchy. My Expression Media hierarchical keywords were imported with the image but they appear as flat keywords in LR's Keyword List box. There is no structure. Also, in the Keyword Tags box they are in alphabetical order (separated by commas), not the original hierarchical order.

What am I missing? Can you provide a screenshot of a sample of hierarchical keywords in LR?

I took this photo in EM (after synchronised the keywords first)
I exported a copy of the image into a temp folder and opened this into a new Lightroom catalog

As you can see, the hierachy is maintained.

Thanks, Roelof. For comparison I've posted two similar images from my Mac. Note that the Keyword List box in Lightroom shows no hierarchical structure as in your example. Do you have any ideas why my EM hierarchy did not transfer over to Lightroom?

hmm, the only difference i noticed between your situation and mine is the file extensions. I'm using DNG's in stead of NEF's.
So i tested it and YES, i could reproduce it!
With NEF's the hierarchy is NOT maintained
With DNG's the hierarchy is maintained

PS: i don't know why this is...

Bad luck - or bad code.
I know where my vote is cast.

Thanks for the test, Roelof. I conducted my own test and can confirm that the DNG hierarchy is maintained in LR (assuming the hierarchical keywords are added to the DNG after converting NEF -> DNG). I know DNG is more compatible with a wider variety of programs but I prefer to use Capture NX 2 as my editor for NEF files. Hmmm.

I'm guessing this is a limitation of EM as MP handles the Hierarchical Keywords alright using XMP side car files'

ORF raw files hierarchicaly key worded in MP.

Thanks for the additional test, Paul. That explanation makes sense. I still haven't purchased MP yet because of the reported instability, Phase One's apparent lack of commitment to MP as a standalone DAM, and my lack of desire to use sidecar files. (I edit my NEFs in Nikon Capture NX2, which doesn't use side cars.)
