Lightroom Catalog Import

I do not have a clear answer for you but it is my understanding that CO does not import or convert .dng files very well. I have not tried this but I'm remembering something along these lines from the Sascha Erni book on Capture One Pro 9.

Thanks, George. I have been thinking of getting that book. I suppose I have a compelling reason to do so now. I contacted tech support, and they didn't mention this. It might be best to seek the advice of an impartial observer...

    Hi,
I have done the same a year ago. The images are just RAW, they are not Adobe Camera RAW or C1. They are just opened and read by C1 (or by Adobe Camera RAW if you use Photoshop or Lightroom).
I shoot with a camera the RAW format of which is .dng, and I didn't get any trouble in importing all my previous LR catalog (which contained .CR2, TIFF, .dng, and so on), except that it took some time and that you have to wait the operation to be completely over. If not, you could miss some (many) pictures.
And in any case, the catalog is just a catalog, and not your original files, except if you decide to store your original files in the C1 catalog, which is an option (that I don't recommend).

Edit : Capture One Pro 9, current version, opens .dng converted files far more better than previously. You can have a look at the Phase One website to confirm. My native .dng are perfectly opened by C1.

    Why not?

I'm curious about this as well. Thanks to both of you for your input. FWIW: I also ordered the Sascha Emi book.

Because it takes a lot of space on your SSD if you have plenty of files (I have more than 17,000 files, i.e. more than 500 Go), and because you can open your RAW files from an other computer or software when they are on an external HDD. And I make copies of this HDD just in case..... It seems to me more flexible, and you don't lose in velocity, as C1 works first on the previews, and opens the RAW files only when needed (local adjustments for instance).

Thanks. That makes perfect sense but not applicable to me really. I have less than 10,000 images. I do not have an SSD (I wish I did). Currently performance is not an issue. I sync the originals file (in the CO Catalog) with a file on the same external drive that I back up my catalog database to so they are easily portable and accessible.
