transferring existing catalog plus albums to an external HD
I am shooting away from home for a few weeks. I have been loading my images onto my laptop using CO7 but my HD is getting full and I need to make more space. I have kept all the images in one catalog and filed them on a daily basis under Albums. Is there a way that I can get the original files to an external HD, leaving me with the previews on my laptop? I'm presuming that I will be able to get any images on an external HD back into CO7 on my desktop computer when I get home. Cheers, jp

You can't import/merge CO catalogs at present.
You can write out xmp sidecars to your images and then import them into your main catalog and CO will retain the keywords, ratings and adjustments etc. but the albums will be lost as they are stored in the catalog.
You could also plug in an external HD and create a folder on it from within CO and then drag the images from the catalog to that folder (from within CO). Then they will referenced files rather than being inside the catalog. This will free up space but you will still have the problem of not being able to merge catalogs and will lose some data like albums.
I would use sessions on the laptop as they can be moved to an External HD easily and can be imported into your catalog on your main PC.0 -
Thanks Sizzilingbadger. I guess I should have sorted this out before my trip. Sessions was probably the way to go. I still have a week of shooting left so I could start using Sessions. Would you mind telling me how to export a session to my external HD. Do I create a Session for every day's shoot - currently I have been putting the day's shoot into a catalog Album. Thanks, jp 0 -
I would do sessions for each shoot/day you can split it however it suits. Then you just copy the entire session folder to the other drive. 0 -
Thank you very much for your help. I now understand the concept. Cheers, jp 0
