Same problem, when deleting files, from time to time CO says "cannot delete" and then "same file in directory".

Make sure the CaptureOne folder (subfolder in Trash) is empty also. The latest release is leaving a bunch of setting files, *.cos, of the files I delete. Within CO I'm having to try deleting several times and then manually deleting the setting files.

Well you shouldnt have to go into the explorer do manually remove the settings files. They should be removed automaticly when i use "empty trash"

    This is a bug!

Yep, the initial release gave me problems with deleting, then a subsequent fix seemed better, but now it's back to square one again. Still a great program, just a few glitches now and then. I'm sure things get will worked out soon.

Just finished another set of photos and it looks like none of the setting files are being deleted after deleting their corresponding raw files. No setting files can be found in my trash folder, just the raws and proxies.

    Hey gang,
Can one, or more of you, create a support case and send a system profile?
It does seem like this is a bug but I want to be thorough before we consider it solved, just so we don't repeat the error again.

Please define "system profile" and the easiest way to get it. I did a search here in the forum but the search engine complains the phrase is too generic to search for.

I have been having this issue for months and put in a support case back in Jan. Haven't heard anything in almost 2 months. Was hoping this wold be fixed in 5.1 but it isn't.

What I have found is that pressing the delete key will cause the error. Right clicking and selecting delete doesn't seem to cause the error. I have just started to rate my deletes with 1 star so when I get done editing my files I sort by Rating, select the 1 star files, right click and delete them. Royal PIA but not as bad as having to make 6 mouse clicks to delete one file.

    Two remarks:
    1. Have you checked your case online to see whether there is any reply?
    2. You can - if you want - have your 1-star files selected before sorting by rating; just a note.

    Dan,
We both know very well that the above is not true. You have several support cases, all of which have been answered promptly, patiently and given the correct attention. The most recent has actually been waiting on information from you for over 1 month, which was supplied today.
The supporter who currently has your case concerning this issue will get back to you on Monday, as your response today will be followed up.

    Drew,

This is true, check my cases before you start bashing me. Case Opened Jan 19, 2010 which is over 2 months ago. You are right, it has only been about a month since I have heard anything. That is a mistype on my part.

If you would have looked at my support case you would have also seen that I spent enough time troubleshooting to notice that this error only seems to occur when you press the DEL key, if you right click and delete the files this error never occurs (at least for me this is very repeatable). When using the DEL key I get the error almost every 3 deletes. I now tag my deletes and delete all at once using the right mouse menu and can delete hundreds of files with no errors.

Ver 5.1 was releases and according to the tech this was addressed in v 5.1 yet he never replied to my support case asking me to use v5.1 to see if this resolved my issue. He only responded when I asked for an update.

You came on this post and asked for someone to put in a support case, my point was that I already did.

Don't believe me, here is the support case

    Case details

    Dear Dan,
I have received a report fro our R&D team that they are aware of this issue now and that it is being investigated further.

I cannot tell you when will it be fixed as it depends on correctly finding the cause and implementing and testing a solution, but it is something that we are actively working on now.

Thank you very much for contacting us.
    With kind regards,

    Jakub

I asked for an update and here was the response.

    Dear Dan,
isn't there any change with version 5.1? I checked the developer notes and it seems that they did address this issue prior to 5.1 release, but have a note there that we might still need to encounter the issue in some cases that need to be then properly documented as each case might differ (that is the reason for this error).

Can you please try creating a new session in 5.1 as reusing older session might bring this issue back from previous version.

    With kind regards,

    Jakub

    Dan,
Not bashing and not trying to argue semantics... it was the typo you just noticed that I was simply pointing out.

My support case was updated yesterday claiming the problem has been found and a fix is in the works.

After a quick test of v5.1.1, my delete problems have not shown up, so hopefully it's fixed. The release notes only "A number of bug fixes," but no indication of what they were.

Finally had another photo event to test this, alas it looks like my deletion problems remain the same. The .cos files are remaining after I delete the raw file. I'm also getting occasional errors saying that I couldn't delete a file because it was being used by another person or program, which isn't true.

Strangely, the leftover .cos problem doesn't seem to happen if I restart the program after the previews and initial .cos files have been created, which is probably why my first "quick test" seemed to be okay. This reminds me of when I use to have to restart CO v3 to get rotations to apply properly before processing.

    Still testing....

A little input from a very old software engineer might help...

"errors saying that I couldn't delete a file because it was being used by another person or program"

This appears to be a concurrency issue.

If you whack the delete key on an image while its preview is being rendered in the viewer or C1 is performing some other action on the file, the above error is generated. It isn't actually "another person or program" but appears to be another thread within C1 Pro acting on the file. The end result is the same, of course, the file appears "locked" to the operating system and can't be moved / deleted.

The work around is to wait until the little spinning "I'm doing something" icon goes away... then you can delete with impunity.

Probably a complete sod to fix 😉

I agree with your assessment, but I think it goes deeper than just the activity indicator as I receive the errors without any activity being displayed. Probably a deeper thread working. Like I said earlier, the .cos files behave after restarting CO.

Even antivirus software can cause this.

It's not antivirus software 'cos I'm not running any 😉 Absolutely 100% certain it's another phase one thread locking up the file. I run a very "controlled" machine, I know what's accessing my discs and when.

it's a software bug that is supposed to be fixed. They have finally been able to reproduce the problem at P1. One way around the bug is to right click and select delete instead of the delete key. At least for me this works. It's a PIA but it seems to work. Hopefully 5.2 will be out soon and have this finally fixed.

Mmm... well one of the driving reasons why I prefer C1 to some of the alternatives is the ability to do many things via keyboard short-cuts. When you're processing hundreds of images from an event, going from keyboard to mouse and vice versa all the time is a pain, literally. That way lies RSI! Using the mouse to delete files isn't really much of a workaround.

However, this week I decided to change operating system on my PC from Windows XP (32 bit) to Windows 7 (64 bit). I won't say "upgrade" yet as I've still to reach a firm conclusion on that.

Now the interesting thing is, I have yet to see the "can't delete error" under Windows 7, whilst I would see it every third or fourth image under XP. Capture One Pro version was 5.1.1 in both cases.

The WinXP installation might improve on this as well after refreshing (read: delete) the preference file USER.CONFIG. Or it is the fact the your Win7 installation is fresh.

It could be any of the above. It might also be that Windows 7 has a different file locking and concurrency model to Windows XP so the bug never arises (that's what I'm hoping, anyway).
