Catalog backup

Hi, my system is MBP Mojave 10.14.5 Cap 11.3.2. I keep my catalog and files on an external HD where I do all my edits etc. I then use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my catalog and raw files to another external HD. I also backup my catalog to the Mac HD but not the raw files. When I open one of the backup catalogs it will only reference files from the first external HD, could some tell me how to get the backup catalog to reference files from the backup HD please. Thanks.
