meanwhile i was surprised and disappointed to discover that i can't import in CO the Adobe DNG files created from both HDR and Panorama merge

    Any clues about this?

    Many thanks

The CO release notes indicate that several flavours of DNG file are supported up to DNG V1.2.

Adobe have subsequently developed releases 1.3 and 1.4 which seem to go some way beyond the concept of being a data file if one is to believe Wikipedia. (I could search the Adobe site I suppose but my interest currently is not so great that I need to know the details ....)

At a wild guess I would imagine that the functionality they have just introduced would require 1.3 or more likely 1.4 . I assume you can check that somewhere in the DNG file information.

If the new features do indeed make use of the inbuilt functions to deliver their results it is likely that there is a whole new area of functionality to be developed (or licenced) in order to do anything with them. One would guess that for now Adobe, as the instigators of the concept, will be in pole position to deliver whatever it is currently capable of. I think if I was a developer I would wait to see how well it is received and judge how much the market really needs it before diving in to create something related. Presumably subsequent releases will improve upon the first efforts.

There are of course always the other considerations of file dimensions (C1 has some boundaries their) and perhaps file sizes but I think if you would need to ask Technical Support about any existing constraints.

BTW - all of the Adobe publicity I have seen talks about these features being available in LightRoom CC. Have they also been released in the purchased version of LR or are they only available on subscription?

The merge functionality is available also in the standard Lr6 edition
I think you are right about DNG compatibility version...
i just converted a merged DNG in to a new DNG 1.2 (via Adobe DNG converter)
and now it can be imported in to CO8!

I have to say that i am frankly surprised that an high end tool like CO8 its so unfriendly towards the DNG format
obviously they don't believe in it ...but i still hope that the team will understand that many photographers have or had a workflow with DNGs ..and its important to give them a better and wider support

Be aware that DNG is a container, it may not necessarily be a raw file. For example the Adobe Smart Previews are DNG but contain a jpg, I expect the merged DNG's are the same.

DNG support in CO is very basic, I would argue to the point of being near useless in many cases. I have a couple of years worth of Nikon files converted to DNG and they look horrible in CO. I never use DNG anymore.

I have just purchased CO8 as part of my move away from Aperture. I didn't like the Lightroom UI when I trialled v5 last year, but the Panorama feature of CC/v6 really does appeal. I'm now considering an Adobe Photography subscription too, in order to get Photoshop CC and incorporating it into my CO8 workflow. I'd use it for things like Content Aware Fill, Panoramas and HDR Merge.

Ettore, you mention that working with a RAW DNG file rather than a TIFF is 'much nicer'. I'm completely ignorant as to the downsides of working with TIFF. I thought that a TIFF was as good as a RAW file, in that it had all the data of the original plus edits 'baked in'. I'd welcome a little schooling as to the benefit of this new LR6 implementation 😕 Thanks

Out of interest I thought I would run a search to see what I could dig up about DNG 1.3 and 1.4 and Adobe's objectives for it.

Early in the list appeared this piece from CNET dated October 2012.

    http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/revamped-dn ... ibilities/

It's quite informative in several ways and worth a read.

It has taken Adobe 2.5 years to bring their latest DNG standards into their mainstream products. And if I recall correctly that coincides with a 64bit only release. Presumably there are good reasons for not rushing it out.

I would suggest that it will not really be a surprise if others take a little longer yet to adopt and implement the technology. Assessing the feedback from LightRoom users might be an important part of the decision making process. (Note the comments in the article about the situation for CinemaDNG back then.)

I suppose I should probably dig further but time does not allow that just now so this is all I can offer.

The only downside to TIFF is it is a bigger file.

Not exactly - Smart Previews are based on Lossy DNG, but they (and Lossy DNG) are not (despite what this site says) "just" a DNG container with a jpeg in it.

Don't you think you might have read the explanations on the thread as to why this might be the case, before whining about it?

Excuse me but I read this post and the provided links. Synopsis: C1 does not support DNG Version 1.4 so either export to a DNG 1.2 or a tiff.

With the release of CO 8.3, DNG Version 1.4 is supported.
