so you want to use C1 8 with athours Programs 😎
    1. C1 8 don't support any Plugins Apps or Shaered Catalog with athours vendor Apps, only Mediapro " don't works well at this moment " but....
there are away to transport your Pictures away from C1 8 catalog and sended back agin 😉 this way is not flexible but its work on my imac.

    1. you have to make a new folder on your HD called .. " External Edit "
    2. you import this folder to your Catalog in C1
    3. pick a picture in C1 catalog and export it as Tiff in this folder " the Metadata send with the Tiff "
    4. open the folder in Finder and reight click " open with Apps..."
    5. Make your changes in by using HDR,PHOTOMATX,PIXELMATOR,PHOTOSHOP,NIK-Collection,GIMP...........what ever you like
    6. save it back as TIFF " Dont Change the file Name"
7.OPEN C1 and click on the Folder ... " Synchron"
    8. at the import dialog keep the image in the folder place !
    thats it down .....
but not flexible " NO AUTOMATION " 😭

Are you sure you mean Photomatix, which is HDR and tonemapping software, and not Photo Mechanic, which is actually designed to do just what you describe?

Just wanting to make sure, so others who may have a solution are informed correctly.

I don't think the OP is actually looking to send images from CO to another program, but to start in another program and then, after adding keywords, import the images with the keywords into CO.

But of course, i could be mistaken.

what ever the Workflow is the same !
also Photomechanik can't give a good synchronation between C18 Catalog and athours Vendors Apps,
i traid the demo version and was desapointed !
the problem is C1 8 don't let athours Prog. to read inside the Catalog files because capture one dont makes Changes directly on main File in one folder, he save the changes as smoll thumbinal in .cot file and in anouther place 😁
OK ... but the changes with Metadata, keywords.. should bee working grade with XMP file ! you have to aktivate this option it in the setting. i am toalking hier about a workflow for Photografer hows work editing images using defrent Pro. Progs with C1, in one main catalog 💡
This is what i am missing now in C1... and hope that Phase one are anderstanding this
way Aperture is stel need it ?

Sorry Guys, the auto correct played me a joke. I meant Photo Mechanic.

you're right HCS, I don't want to import from C1, instead with C1 open the files I saved using Photo Mechanics. Side cards are created and keywords are read, however hierarchical order is not always recognized by C1.

    Well ... no, not really.

I can imagine, i would be as well.

This is exactly the point where starting from a different software is different from sending from CO to another software.

It may indeed be the case that CO is not absorbing all of the metadata structures as you expect. I, too, think CO should do this and also hope that P1 is listening. However, they may be focusing on other priorities right now (i have no clue), like stability, speed, other features. If you look across the forum, anyone and everyone has another topic they find most important and P1 should work on that. Well, unfortunately, that is not possible.

I, for one, rather have them do some things right, than many things a little bit (read: wrong).

I haven't tried/tested the keyword import into CO, as i'm not using the catalogs. I may test this some time in the future, but for now i'm rather satisfied with my DAM system (photosupreme) that truly supports DAM for more than just image files and also supports hierarchies (keyword and otherwise). It also plays nicely with CO, so i'm a happy camper.

There may be other users though, who are actually working with the catalogs and can check/confirm your findings.

hi all, I am using Photo Mechanics to ingest the files and using variables being able to automatically storage them where where I want (by YYYY / MM) and not manually having to select the folder. As well, because keyboarding in Photmatix is easier than in C1, as the first one has the list of all my used and not used keywords. Everything works great until then, files and XMP Sidecards are correctly saved, however.........when adding them into C1 Pro v. 8.x the keywords are not hierarchically imported as should be.
In Photo Mechanics I have added either as "Apply path to selected" or "Apply keyword to selected" or "Apply collection to selected".
Could any of you help me?
    Regards,

    Daniel,
I looked into this and my conclusion is that Photo Mechanic is creating the confusion (I use PM since many years, like it a lot).
PM has "Structured Keywords" which is a hierarchical structure. However, when you apply a certain keyword, the entire chain of the hierarchy is stored in a flat, non-hierarchical way. As a result it will show up as a flat listing in other programs as well.

hi Paul, I see that PM is separating the keywords with a "," that for C1 means flat keyboarding, instead of ">". This is intriging me as sometimes the hierarchy was apply, why sometimes is working and sometimes not?; therefore I cannot believe that the answer is so easy a that.
In PM there is an option to use a pipe "|" to separate keywords in a hierarchical way, would this work?...I will try and keep you posted.
    Cheers,
    Daniel

Does it perhaps work if you already have in the Catalog a hierarchy that fits the word group?

In other words is it using something that pre-exists but is unable to understand enough to create new entries?

    Hi,

I do use PM for importing as you and I use the pipe "|" as a separator in keywording, C1 shows the hierarchy without problems.

  • Paul Steunebrink
Thanks for the tip with the separator. It maintains the hierarchy in CO8 too!

hi Wolfgang, thank you for the information.

P1 online help for Keywords shows both pipe (|) and arrow (> or <) are available for defining hierarchical keyword sets from keyboard entry. One might therefore consider testing the > and < symbols as separators in datafile uploads too.

    Hi,

following your trend, I was wondering, in PM, where to change the "," coma in the key wording to the "|" Column, there seam to have only the coma and the semi-colon?

    thanks

  • Frank Gregorek
I am looking for the same answer Olivier sought in his post on this topic: where in Photo Mechanic are people finding the ability to change the keyword separator from a comma (,) to a pipe (|) in order to maintain the hierarchical structure with respect to keywords applied in Photo Mechanic when the data is read by C1? Like Olivier, I only see the option comma and semi-colon options.

    Thanks
