new "round trip" functionality
I am still working on version 7 and have been using sessions instead of catalogs because of the inability of C1 to automatically import any images changed by an external editor when I use the export to call an external editor. The session functionality works well and I have not had any real problems calling external editors and getting the returned image back into the session (except for the pain of having to manually navigate to the correct folder so I can actually see the image).
PhaseOne is advertising a change to 8.1 with some kind of new "round trip" functionality. I had previously downloaded and tested 8.0 but saw no reason to upgrade since there did not seem to be anything of real value for me in the upgrade. Since I am not sure I can download and test 8.1 since my test period for 8.0 has expired I wanted to ask what this new "round trip" functionality actually is. Is it the ability to export to an external editor and automatically import the result into the working catalog? Or is it just speeded up session functionality? Or is it something else? And is there any real benefit to using a catalog instead of a session? I am trying to figure out if it is worth the upgrade cost.
Thanks.

You can download and test version 8.1, you will get another 30 day trial period. I can confirm that the round-trip is working fine and its something I have wanted for a long time too.
A lot of the changes in version 8 are "under he covers" and catalogs seem to work much more smoothly and faster. There is still work to do in my opinion but its going in the right direction.
I haven't purchased the upgrade to 8 yet either, I have 4 days left with my 8.1 trial. I've just changed camera systems so have been re-evaluating between Lightroom (I have the CC subscription) and CO. I'm probably going to buy the upgrade shortly 😉0 -

Yes. Thank you. I downloaded 8.1 and it installed and allowed me another trial period. And I have confirmed that the "Edit in" functionality is working as advertised with a catalog. But I do have some questions that you (or someone else) might be able to answer.
Version 7.2 allowed users to define processing "recipes" and save them so, when using them, I could pick the one I wanted. I have not found any way to do that in 8.1. I can process by clicking File -> Export Images, but I don't see any way to save recipes there. I have searched the Help but it did not help me. Is the functionality gone? Or am I just missing where it is located?
When I select the "Process all selected variants" icon on the upper right part of the GUI I am told that there are no selected recipes. OK. Since I cannot see how to create the recipes I don't know how to select one specific one. How do I do that?
And just a general question. In version 7 I could not use a catalog and call an external editor in any useful way because it would not automatically import the saved and edited file into the catalog and display it, so I ended up using sessions instead of catalogs. In 8.1 I can use a catalog since the external editing restriction is gone. But is there any advantage to using a catalog instead of a session? C1 creates sidecar files so I can always load the images and still have the previous adjustments. I don't keep the processed images on the processing machine so don't need any location functionality. Given that, is there any advantage to using a catalog instead of using a session?

Mike,
The process recipe functionality should be in just the same place and is not much changed from V7. Some detailed enhancements but basically it should look familiar.
If you can't see it something odd has happened. I assume you are running Pro version. Not sure what the other versions offer there.
Can;t comment much on Catalogs. I use sessions. I'm not keen on catalogs for my needs although using one or two for finished images after Processing is something I have considered. Providing one retains the file name or some other means of direct identification of the original it might be a nice way to create a widely searchable index of images but kept small using processed jpegs.

Well, that is certainly what I thought would be the case.

In version 7 my GUI displays 2 processing icons. One, at the top on the left, allows me to define recipes and the other one, at the top and on the right, allows me to send selected and edited images to that processing recipe. In Version 8 the one on the left, which allows me to define the recipes, just is not there. Here are some screen shots.
Version 7. Notice the left icon allowing me to define the recipes.
Version 8. Note that the left icon is completely missing. Without it how am I supposed to define my recipes for processing?
Can anyone tell me where to look so that I can define my recipes? I assume it is there but I just don't know where.0 -
It is there (the Output tool tab as it is named with the cogwheel) but not displayed. You can restore the default workspace from the Window menu > Workspace > Default. You should find it again. 0 -
Thank you. You were right.
It does puzzle me though. I downloaded the trial version and, when I opened it, there was no recipe tab to be seen. It is not as though I made a change to the workspace, saved it and then could not see it. That was the workspace of the newly installed trial.
In any case it is now fixed. Thank you again.0
