Why does C1 insist on Sharpening the Previews?
C1's conversion quality is currently the best out there, IMHO.
However, I find the fact that the program insists on sharpening (and very severely too) any and all previews from within the program itself a major problem. This is distinctly unprofessional as well. Uncle Al may like to see super sharp previews, but what I and my retouchers need is very soft, unsharpened files, thank you.
Now, as I said before, when I output the actual tiffs, they come out as I require, nice and soft, as I have all sharpening disabled under preferences. but no matter what I do, from within the program itself, the preview never looks exactly like the actual conversion, bec. there is no seeming way to disable the over-aggressive sharpening. (one would think that the proper function of the simulate sharpening button would be to do this, but it does not).
It gets a bit tedious to have to remind oneself constantly that all the noise and sharpening artifacts one sees within C1 at 400% will not actually be present in the conversion. Why is the conversion quality top notch while the preview system seemingly for amateurs who think \"sharper\" must mean \"better?\"
When all sharpening is disabled for output, it should be disabled for previewing as well, to match.

nineinone,
For the record a Preview is just that... a Preview
To judge sharpening, quality, noise, artifacts, moire, anything... from the Preview is not quite the best way to work. To accurately analyze an image is to use the Focus Tool and view the image area from the actual RAW file in the Focus View window.
>> With Preferences set to disable sharpening, none will be applied to image upon processing
>> With the icon Simulate Sharpening turned off, no sharpening will show in Preview.
So with these set correctly, and you still don't like the Preview image displayed, stay persistent. This is the first concern of the Preview image being too sharp... most voice concern over not clear enough. Through versions, the size of the Preview has increased due to requests for higher quality Preview images. That said, one of the strengths of Capture One is the versatility to match various workflows and tastes.
Some suggest a Preview Quality Choice preference setting that I think may be good addition.
If you agree, then please make a Feature Request throught the Help > Technical feedback... link in Capture One.
Cheers,
k c0
