I am not a professional either. I have not found version 10 slow. I use sessions rather than catalogs, so my experience may be something to do with not trying to work with a large catalog.

There are several reviews of the new features for instance here and here . The new features may be more important to some users than to others. I imagine that it would do me good to get to grips with the new sharpening options but I haven't as yet. I wouldn't say that any of the new features have been game-changers for me, whereas some new features from earlier versions were (for instance being able to apply white balance as a local adjustment). But I have been enjoying using version 10 and I've been pleased with the results from it.

Don't forget that you can download version 10 and run it as the trial version alongside version 9. (But be careful to have a backup of the version 9 versions of sessions or catalogs, because if you convert them to version 10 you can't convert them back.)

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Fred,

What I like very much in version 10 is its ability to display softproofing including the color space AND the size, together with the possibility of sharpening depending upon the output planned (screen, print,...).
The extension of local adjustment to additional tools is very interesting as well.
The only minus is that the catalog works worst than in version 9. I have about 18,000 pictures, and it takes 30 seconds to display all when clicking on "All Images" if I want to apply a filter. It took only 5 seconds with version 9.
Phase One team is aware of this "bug", i.e. the slowness of version 10 as far as this issue is concerned, and is working at it. You can try version 10, as suggested by Ian, but hopefully a version 10.1 could be released in a short (?) time solving some bugs, including the one cited.

i am still using V 9 in session mode since V7, and find my best way.... never update any moor.
my experience tel me , Bugs are only solved in new Versions. i remember the Performance speed problem with V9 and now
    moor speed in V10.
i read all Forums in Web talking about the V10 and just hearing from authors users slow performance with Catalog.
i thing its time to do something about it, or send a upgrade v 11 on the market .

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I think I will wait for the update that fixes the problem.

I have not been able to get a sense as to whether the slowing happens to only a few users or is a general problem? What is the consensus? Should I upgrade?

I think it affects a few users. Whether you are potentially one of them, either with a current release or a after a future update, can only be discovered by you on your system.

Don't be afraid. Try 30-days for free and decide.

    Thanks, Fred

I use a referenced catalog on a iMac 5K and find database operations (selecting images, selecting ranges of images, applying color tags, etc.) to often be slow. Slow as in a noticeable lag for things that are essentially instant in Lightroom.

My recent ticket on the matter resulted in a thread of suggests and possibilities that ended with the acknowledgement that the R&D Team was working on a possible software solution.

There are many forum posts in several places about the perceived slowness of C1's database. I haven't personally seen any slowness in the image adjustment tools.
