Help required 7D sharpening settings C1 5.1.1
I would like to ask any 7D owners to share their C1 sharpening settings with me please,
I have way too much noise in processed 7D files, even at 100 iso 😭
My sharpening settings are always around 300, 0.8, 1.0 and this works well for my 1D, 300D and 400D.
I recently bought a 7D for my wife and I'm unable to get the sharpening right ❓
If I turn sharpening off the noise goes but the images look too soft.

Dave,
Out of curiosity what was the ISO setting on the 7D?0 -
Hi Drew,
The noise is visible from ISO's as low as 100 and much more noticeable by ISO 3200 (I have not tried higher), I should add though, that's it's only visible when zoomed to 100%
It could be just the pixel density that's causing it, but then I would have thought other people might have noticed it as well.
Perhaps it's the camera at fault, as I said in my post I do not have this problem with my other cameras.0 -
Hi Dave, it's hard to comment or suggest settings really, without some idea of what you're doing in Cap One now, and what you shoot.
Suffice to say though that I use a 7D and my Cap One conversions (bird photography) are excellent.
I don't pixel-peep at 100% though! That bit is very important!
😉
I don't know if you're aware (apologies if this is old news to you) but the 7D sensor has a green channel imbalance which can create a "texture" in the files which can be seen as noise (although technically it isn't noise per se) but I've found that (assuming a 400 ISO file - I'm never below 400 ISO), a Luma noise setting of about 17, Chroma noise setting around 30-40, and sharpening between 260 and 300, work really well for me. Remember that detail is hugely important to a bird 'tog, and Cap One absolutely brings the best out of my 7D files.
I do however use Neat Image as a matter of routine at the next stage in my workflow, but I have done since my 30D days, then with my 40D and now the 7D - it's not something I've introduced just for the 7D, and I use it very lightly.
I'm not worried at all about going up to 3200 ISO with the 7D (although I don't often do that for bird shooting) and Cap One is again excellent - I've used 6400 ISO very effectively for indoor shots like gigs and indoor sport.
Any chance that you could post an example of one of your problem files with Exif and Cap One settings?0 -
Hi keith,
Thanks for your reply, no, I was not aware of the green channel imbalance, thanks for that.
I normally don't pixel peep at 100% either, I think I'm only doing it because it's my wife's first DSLR and I want it to be right for her:D
The main thing is that SHE is very happy with the camera and the end results, and that's what counts in this household 😂
All in all I'm very happy with the camera, quite amazing value for money ❗️
Appreciate the offer to look at one of the files for me but I think I will just leave thing as they are, as the problem is only apparent when pixel peeping at 100% and because the wife is very happy with the files as they are.0
