Set as Compare Variant?

Probably a stupid question but what does Set as Compare Variant do? What is the intended workflow using it? I can't seem to find anything in the manual about it. Edit>Set as Compare Variant.

    The Compare Variant is set apart against other images in a folder or Album. You can compare that variant against the rest.

    It is a workflow to that allows you to select the best shot within a series of similar image.

    Note: set the Viewer to Multi View to be able to use the Compare Variant.

    So it basically makes the selected image 'sticky' in the viewer so you can compare others to it?
