Catalog loading for hours- help!
As complete newbe in C1 (previously LR), I'd like to ask for help with catalog handling- guess I'm doing sth very wrong.
I've read some threads about poor catalog performance, but what I'm experiencing is far beyond all complains.
My catalog is 39k photos (mainly DNG). Computer is old crap (i3-550, 16Gb DDr3 ram,GT430, classic 7200rpm hdds), but even though LR was able to work on same database within minutes ( from starting program to all previous loading), and C1 takes...3,5h befor all photos are visible.
Moreover, if I filter e.g just 5* photos ( immediatly after catalog opening), still I see nothing. It shows that I have 3k photos with 5*, but none is visible.
Is that by any possible way normal ??

Hi
My biggest catalog is less than 5000 images, only raw files. I've no idea if DNG makes a difference too. My computer is 5 years old i5-520M based, but I use an SSD (sata II). Catalog performance doesn't make me happy (5 min) but it works, I am looking for a new computer though.
I think you won't get a satisfying performance with a HDD and 39k images, no way. The old processor might also play against you. My advise: Use to trial period to see if the image quality and tools are worth an upgrade or replacement of your computer, and if the DAM / catalog features are suffcient for you. For me it is...
Cheers

I'm already runnig full version ....during test I was smart enought to make it on whole my database. Still C1 is what I was lookin for (sth between LR and PS, but superb in RAW handling), apart from catalog. This is killimg me now.
I'll try with SSD -for system, app and catalog itself (oryginal files I'll keep on external HDD)0 -
Updt: change of procesor (now; i5-2500k) and SSD disk for system( and C1) +RAID0 for database improved work magicly.
Still....in comparison to LR database managment is light years slower (another words: crap)0 -
I keep my latest images on the SSD (sata II) for a while but then move them to a NAS (1GBit network). Opening a catalog is quite slow.
I have the impression that C1 checks for every single image one by one if it is online of offline which I assume is a costly operation. But even with the NAS offline the C1 browser isn't reallly quicker. The time needed can be seen in the application.log.0 -
39956 photos catalog loading in 3,7 min. Previously it was 3,5h.
Change is in procesor and ssd drive.
Found interesting part in log (maybe that's what creates such time lag...):
