why does lens distortion correction also crop?
If you look at the picture below you can see that distortion correction is at 100% for this image. Why does capture one crop that additional area? It doesn't seem to be necessary to crop that area, it looks just fine. How does capture one decide how much it needs to crop? Is that cropping done by capture one or does it belong to the manufacturer profile (Panasonic Lumix LX 100)?
Also: It seems to me that often times I should not care about the distortion of the lens. I'd rather have a little distortion than to loose image quality. Distortion lens correction does degrade image quality, right? How can I prevent capture one from automatically applying the distortion correction during import but let it apply all other parts of the lens correction (like chromatic abberation)?

The correction comes from the manufacturer's profile. I am not sure about the cropping. Have you tried to uncheck the 'Hide distorted areas' box (not sure it makes any difference, just trying)? 0 -
When I uncheck "hide distorted areas" the cropping stays the same . It just additionally display the "bent cushion" edges of the image ( sorry, can't make a screenshot right now). 0 -

Click in the image outside the crop and one would expect the existing crop to be removed.
Having unchecked the "hide distorted areas" setting new crops might be expected to show the extra sections
Do you have a crop ratio selected in the crop tool? If so the cropping might appear to be more than is required.
So far as I can tell C1 will attempt to assess the results of the lens correction and decided which parts of the image might be reasonably considered to be unacceptably crushed or stretched (as a default for regular users) after the correction activity. Using those criteria it will either include everything else if an "Unconstrained" value is set for the crop ratio OR work out the largest crop it can fit into the "acceptable" area taking into account the crop ratio value set.
If you change the ratio the new values will be applied as soon as you make the next edit to the crop but not before.
HTH.

The Capture One crop is the native camera picture resolution without "correction overhead" (netto/brutto sensor resolution). e.g. if your camera has a resolution from 6000x4000px than the crop will have the same size.0 -

When I uncheck "hide distorted areas" it looks like this:

It still really looks like the crop is a little bit too much. There is some room left before the "cushion borders" are hit.[quote="SFA" wrote:

I am not sure what you mean, what tool needs to be active so that when I click in side the image outside the the crop, the existing crop will be removed? I can use the crop tool to make different (larger or smaller) crop but I can't make the crop to disappear just by one click.[quote="SFA" wrote:

Yes, everything you mention is correct for the crop tool. But the crop settings don't seem to have any effect on the lens correction settings in any way.[quote="Thomas R." wrote:

I am not quite sure I understand what you mean. My sensor (Panasonic Lumix LX 100) has a maximum resolution of 4112x3018 (if I chose 4:3 aspect ratio). If I apply distortion correction I will lose image information and if it is also cropped I will lose even more image information. Both of this results in a less detailed image. Even if it is scaled back to the original camera resolution at the end (if that is what you mean by "the crop will have the same size"). The crop you see in the image above doesn't seem to be necessary and if it wouldn't be applied I had a more detailed image because the pixels would not have been scaled up so much. Is this correct?
Anyway I still haven't quite understood if it is the camera or capture one that applied this crop and why it thinks that this crop needs to be applied. The edges never look too distorted or anything after the distortion correct is applied.0
