As I understand it, C1 reads/writes XMP files for the purpose of sharing Metadata with other SW.
Primarily Media Flow. I don't know if the XMP is compatible with LR. My guess would be partially.

Capture One has settings in preferences to determine if and when XMPs are read or written. Don't ask me to explain them, I don't use XMPs much, and I find the C1 settings confusing.

    Hi,
LR or Photoshop xmp can be read by Capture One (and conversely), but only for data which have absolute values, such as stars, crop, text,.... But adjustments cannot be transferred from one software to another, as the cursor scales and values are relative to the used SW.
I don't use xmp, as my RAW files are dng, now. But I imported, 2 years ago, my previous Lightroom catalog, with a lot of Canon (.CR2) pictures, and I recovered stars, crops, any text,... in Capture One, as said above.
    Cheers,
    Robert

Thank you both for your statements. It was really helpful to me.
