Canon 1ds MIII & memory cards/teathered
Canon 1ds Mark III and Compact Flash or SD cards. Mac Pro 10.5.8
When shooting tethered in the studio or on location to C1 is it possible to have an image also recorded on internal CF and/or SD cards. Right now when I shoot, using C1, the image is only recorded to the computer hard drive. When I use Canon's software tethered I can record to both cards and designate which one to display on the computer and then I have 3 copies. One card I designate as the high rez raw version and the display version as the smaller raw version.
The smaller raw version will appear on the monitor very quickly to appease an art director and I then also have another raw backup.
When using C1, which I would prefer over the Canon Software, I only get the one version I have set in the camera as the display and then it is not recorded on any card in the camera. As any working pro knows, having a backup can save you a lot of stress.
Is there a way I am overlooking in C1 to at least have the image also recorded on a card as well as transferred to the computer so I would at least have a backup on the card.

Two remarks.
First, the feature (tethering + storing image on camera card) you are asking for is not available on Capture One. In fact, I am not sure whether Canon has made this available at all in their Software Development Kit, the tool third party developers like Phase One is have to rely on for implementing tethering.
Second, out of curiosity, if I read your post right, with Canon software (must be EOS Utility) you manage to be able to shoot both full rez RAW and sRAW at the same time, store them on both card respectively and have only sRAW come down the line tethered. Amazing! Or did I read it wrong?0 -
I find it interesting that phase is still not offering this feature as it is available with that iPhone App dslremote. So it must be available. I know you can save both sraw and full raw to different cards and then have the sraw sent to camera via the wifi so I don't see why you couldn't do it over USB. I wonder if file name are the same so you can do a simple replace at the end of the day to apply your setting. 0 -
It would be wonderful if Capture One would allow the photographer to save to the computer and the camera's memory card as well. Maybe Canon will allow this if you ask them nicely. I will plan to email our Canon rep and get his response.
As for the Canon camera writing a RAW and an sRAW to the memory card and sending only the sRAW to the computer, can not happen. I use both a Canon MKIII and a 5D MKII that have the RAW and sRAW feature. You can only save a RAW or sRaw+L or M1, M2, S at the same time. You can never a RAW+sRAW files at the same time.
If you want to save a two file size combo to your camera's memory card and choose only one of the two sizes to send over to the computer, you have to do a couple of things. On the MKII, you will need a separate SD card to go in the second card slot. In the menus go to "image size" and choose your combo (example: RAW+s). Next, go to the "Record func+media/folder sel." and choose "Record func", choose "Rec seperarately" followed by selecting "Record/play", choose card number 2. This displays the image on the back of you camera and will send it to your computer. This works for both wireless or USB tethering. The catch is that Capture one software (which I do love) it will only record the file to the computer and not to the camera' memory card–as stated at the top. You have to use Canon's iffy EOS Utility to save to the camera and the computer. EOS Utility is very "prickly" software.
Capture One is the best tethering software out there. It also works great with the wireless as well. In both cases, you can turn the camera off and back on and Capture One will connect back up. EOS Utility will work fine for a while and then it starts going "wacky". Rebooting is the only thing that fixes EOS Utility–a real pain. Every photographer I know has the same problem.
Just a side note, I have been told by a several shooters that they are having problems tethering with their Canon MKIII's to the new v5 of Capture One.0
