Phase One is tweaking the performance of the new backs in Capture One 5 with every release. Are you on 5.2 already and your comments still stand?

And regarding the red level of P65+ converted to DNG and opened in ACR: ACR up to the current 6.2 does not have native support for P65+ and as a result it does not have profiles to support it. DNG conversion might help you to open the file in ACR but the colors are a wild card. Could have been blueish or greenish as well.

    Hi Christian,

C1's highlight recovery isn't quite as good as that of ACR or Lr - it's just something that the Adobe products do better.

But to keep a sense of perspective about this, the free Raw Therapee is much better again than the Adobe software - all software has its strengths and weaknesses. This is why I don't rely exclusively on a single conversion solution - if I'm dealing with a really tough "highlights" challenge (and as a bird photographer I frequently do) I'll fire up Raw Therapee.

@Paul_E: Yup. No major improvements on tough highlights in 5.2. I truly hope C1 will get some improvements there soon. Although C1 is better in many points than ACR, the single point that it gets details where C1 only sees white is just a real killer.

@Keith: Thanks for the hint. I will check that out. I have some HDR shots where I wonder if they can be converted from "hrm" to "cool" 😉

I don't have a P65+ but I agree that that highlight and shadow recovery are possibly the weakest adjustments of C1. I have been setting my tone curve to linear and adjusting my brightness and curves myself to over come this.

Someone in these forums once mentioned that the Shadow Slider goes too far into the midtones, and after just processing some files shot in direct sun, I see the same problem with the Highlight Slider as well. It would be great if Phase could narrow the tones down a bit, so the sliders only effects the highlights, and the shadows, and leave the midtones alone.

I use a P65+, also shot snow with it, and also lost a lot in the highlights. As ben43456 says, adjusting your film curve to linear response makes a difference, and it's the film curve I use for all my P65 shots. I also use a target as much as possible, and do my best to work by the numbers, not what my monitor is "showing" me. While I can't (unfortunately!) use the white balance "picker/eyedropper" for color values I can still use it for tonals. For snow in sunlight I'd probably set the highlight value at 255, but is there anything in the shot on the dark side you can set your shadow values with?
