C1Pro7 desktop folder when using referenced images

If you want to the files to referenced, you have to choose "Current location" when you import. "Inside catalog" does what it says, imports the pictures to within the catalog structure.

Thanks Christian, Yes I was using the"Current Location" as the location and this folder "C1Pro7" still shows up on my desktop with duplicates inside. Basically it's a copy of what's on the hard drive, which to me is redundant. Any other thoughts?

I have seen similar reports earlier with CO Pro 7.0. Do you use 7.0.1 already? Seems to me that the images on the desktop are created there in error but have no clue regarding cause, workaround or solution (other than keeping up to date).

Thanks Paul. Yes I'm at 7.0.1 build 64201.

In a way I'm glad that someone has reported this before and it's not my inadequacy at using the program.

I will keep investigating and checking to see if I have a setting wrongly set. I'm sure this cannot be right b/c its a ridiculous waste of Hard Drive space especially with file sizes reaching the heavens!

    Thanks again

    For Those interested ...

This situation occurs when I work in Sessions. When I try creating a new Catalog things seem to work better and I get a simple catalog file embedded in the same folder as the original images. However once the import has occurred a whole set of different criterion show up that includes Magenta Casts and Black images, so this is becoming a boondoggle and I now have a very expensive Software paperweight along with a great opportunity to spend countless wasted hours trying to resolve the issue rather than finishing off my files. See also post regarding my issues.

Are you copying your images from the camera/memory card to an external drive and then using the IMPORT functionality of a C1 session?

If so I would expect you to get an imported folder of files just as if you were copying the files from a memory card using the Import facility.

You don't mention your approach to making backup copies - my personal preference if to Import form Memory to a Session on the processing machine and then copy the entire session off to an external disk, updating as and when required as processing progresses. I mention this only in case it helps to see what you do in a different light in temrs of potential workflows.

If you have previously copied the files from a memory card (or whatever) to your external drive and simply want to work with them left on that drive then do not "Import" to a session. Just navigate to the folder on the external drive (as a system folder) and work on the contents.

Apologies if I have misunderstood but the description so far suggests that you have imported to the session when you don't really want to for your purposes.

    HTH.

    Aloha Grant!
Thanks for your response. I always transfer files onto an external drive and work from there. If the work is of a crucial nature I can also backup the files to a second hard drive thus affording me some security.

My understanding (obviously flawed) was that I needed to somehow create a catalog of the images before c1pro7 could be used to process them. Your post suggests that is a wrong conclusion and that I should be able to work on the files by simply navigating to them through the system. I tried this and it works perfectly on my pre Canon 1dx files (Images shot with my old Canon 1dIV and III cameras), but the files from my 1dx come into C1Pro7 and show up with a magenta cast. When I highlight the file to see it as a larger preview, in opens with a magenta cast then turns black. So something is awry with C1Pro7's handling of the 1Dx files. Strangely enough another European software maker had a similar problem, but recently updated and the cast disappeared.

I've tried to start a problem ticket through support, but when I open the page and login through any of the browsers I use, none of the "submit" buttons will post up my request through the website. So that's another silly issue I'm facing.

I also like the workflow you've suggested and use ...

"my personal preference if to Import form Memory to a Session on the processing machine and then copy the entire session off to an external disk, updating as and when required as processing progresses."

I assume this then keeps any adjustments you make as part of the original file. And I'll try that on some older files until the 1dx situation is resolved.

Thanks so much for your response. Have a great New Years!

    Aloha

    Hi David,

Re the 1Dx - yep there do seem to be some issues reported. I use Canon but not 1Dx. And until I have resolved my best options for upgrading my Win based computers to 64bit (factors beyond C1 are involved) I am as yet unable to run C1 V7 - but in terms of SESSION based workflow my understanding it that the basic functionality is as it is in V6 and I am familiar with that. C1 V6 does not have catalogues so that will be an interesting leaning experiment for me at some point.

I tend to work with drives in the system rather than external mainly for better performance than I can get with an external drive. However there are exceptions - if I'm really in a rush to see something I may even work off the memory card! (Usually test shots that I don't really feel any great need to move to a more permanent storage at prior to assessment.)

What I like about sessions is that the entire session can be readily backed up as and when necessary to whatever media is preferable. I don't have to keep things backed up in large catalogues. Works for me as most of what I shoot are events and I can name the session for the event. Adding full and useful catalogue info would be very time consuming (just gathering the details that would add something to the purpose) and probably pointless in most cases.

There will, no doubt, be exceptions in the future that will get me thinking differently for some projects. Different horses for different courses.

Glad you got some of your files to work with the session based concept. I'm sure the 1Dx thing will be resolved soon. There are so many variables out in the wilds of Computer World these days that I am often amazed when anything works at all.

    Happy New Year!
